The best time to go for a weekend
Phuket has two moods. From roughly November to April the Andaman Sea is calm, the sky is mostly clear and boats run on schedule. From around May to October the south-west monsoon brings rain showers, bigger swells and the occasional day when boat trips are shortened or moved to a sheltered bay. Phuket airport is in the north of the island, and almost every popular beach is a long drive south. Budget somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour and a half to reach Patong, Kata or Karon, longer in the evening rush and in the high season. This is the single biggest hidden cost of a weekend: your first and last hours are spent on a road.

For a weekend of three nights or fewer, I would stay in one place and not move. Packing and unpacking is a tax you cannot afford. Kata and Karon are my default for a first weekend because the beach is easy and the road to the main piers is manageable.
