About Summer Palace Admission Ticket + 2.5 hours Guided Tour Service

Step into the grandeur of China's most magnificent imperial garden, where emperors once sought leisure and tranquility. This guided tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Summer Palace reveals centuries of royal history, stunning architecture, and breathtaking landscapes that have endured through dynastic changes and foreign invasions.

Local Legends & Stories

Legend has it that the Summer Palace was designed to mimic the legendary Kunlun Mountains and the divine Western Paradise, with Kunming Lake representing the vast ocean surrounding the immortal isles. The 17-Arch Bridge is said to have been built so precisely that on certain days, all seventeen arches cast perfect reflections in the water, a feat attributed to imperial astronomers.

Must Do Experiences

  • Walk the legendary 700-meter Long Corridor adorned with over 14,000 colorful paintings depicting Chinese myths and history

  • Climb Longevity Hill for panoramic views of Kunming Lake and the iconic 17-Arch Bridge

  • Explore the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity, the political heart of the imperial court

  • Stroll through the elegant Suzhou Street, a mock commercial street built exclusively for the emperor's amusement

Hidden Gems

  • Visit the Marble Boat early in the morning when crowds are thin — this ornate stone pavilion on the western shore is the palace's most photogenic spot

  • Hidden behind the Tower of Buddhist Incense, the secluded Western Gardens offer a peaceful retreat with lotus-filled ponds and quiet pavilions

  • Peek into the Empress's Quarters to discover the private living spaces of the imperial consorts, often overlooked by hurried tourists

What Makes it Special

  • The only UNESCO World Heritage site in Beijing that combines a vast artificial lake, rolling hills, and over 3,000 traditional wooden structures in one breathtaking ensemble

  • As China's largest and best-preserved royal garden, it seamlessly blends imperial architecture with natural landscapes in a way no other palace in the world matches

  • Built in 1750 during the Qianlong Emperor's reign, this site survived两次 devastating invasions and was meticulously reconstructed, making it a powerful symbol of Chinese cultural resilience

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) offer the most pleasant weather and stunning seasonal scenery, with cherry blossoms in spring and golden ginkgo leaves in autumn. Summer mornings are ideal for avoiding crowds and heat, while winter transforms the palace into a serene monochrome landscape perfect for photography.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • Capture the iconic 17-Arch Bridge at sunrise for soft golden light and minimal crowds reflecting in the calm waters of Kunming Lake

  • The Long Corridor offers incredible photo opportunities — shoot during the golden hour when sunlight filters through the painted beams creating dramatic shadows

  • For the classic postcard shot of the Tower of Buddhist Incense, position yourself on the western bank of Kunming Lake for the best framed composition

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

Remove your shoes before entering any temple areas within the palace complex as a sign of respect When visiting the imperial halls, maintain a respectful distance from restricted areas and follow your guide's instructions about where photography is permitted It is customary to bow slightly toward the direction of the former imperial thrones as you enter the main halls — a small gesture that shows appreciation for Chinese cultural heritage

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • Summer Palace Ice Festival (January to February) — the frozen Kunming Lake transforms into a massive winter playground with ice skating, sleigh rides, and traditional lantern displays

  • Lotus Festival (July to August) — thousands of lotus flowers bloom across the lake, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle that has inspired Chinese poets for centuries

  • Spring Blossom Season (late March to April) — the palace grounds erupt in color with cherry blossoms, peonies, and traditional Chinese flowering trees in full bloom

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Keep a close watch on your belongings in crowded areas around the Long Corridor and main entrances, as pickpocketing can occur in busy tourist zones

  • Stay on marked pathways along the lake edges, especially during rainy seasons when stone pathways can become slippery

  • Carry sufficient water and snacks, as food options within the palace grounds can be limited and involve longer walks to reach

Visitor Information

Entry Fee

Admission to the Summer Palace typically ranges from 30 to 60 RMB depending on the season, with the guided tour package providing combined entry and expert tour services. Children and seniors may qualify for discounted rates, so be sure to bring valid identification.

Visit Duration

The guided tour lasts approximately 2.5 hours, covering the palace's most significant highlights at a comfortable pace. Many visitors find they want to linger longer to explore at their own leisure, so allocating a full half-day allows for a more relaxed and immersive experience.

Accessibility

The Summer Palace offers wheelchair-accessible routes along the main lakefront pathways and to several key attractions, though some hilltop areas and traditional structures with steps may present challenges for visitors with limited mobility.

Overview

Situated in the Haidian District northwest of Beijing, the Summer Palace is a Unesco World Heritage site that used to be the palace and garden of the emperors of the Qing Dynasty. It is the largest and most well preserved royal park in China. Construction of the palace began in 1750 and it served as a residential and entertainment area for the royal members. The palace underwent two major reconstructions after suffering damages during invasions by the Anglo-French Allied Forces and the Eight-Power Allied Forces during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Summer Palace can be divided into three sectors: a political activity area centered at the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity; an empress living area concentrated around the Hall of Jade Billows and Hall of Joy and Longevity; and a tour route concentrated along the long corridor, rear hill, and the west sector.
