Frequently Asked Questions

Admission grants access to the main Confucian Temple courtyards, the historical exhibition halls detailing the imperial examination system, and the traditional study rooms.
Most visitors spend between 45 minutes and one hour walking through the temple courtyards and reading the historical exhibits on ancient Chinese education.
You will see preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architectural structures, stone steles, ancient wooden study desks, and informational displays about the traditional Confucian curriculum.
Take Ningbo Metro Line 4 to Cicheng Station, from which the school hall is approximately a 15-minute walk south into the Cicheng Ancient Town area.
While the architectural courtyards offer space to walk, the site is heavily focused on historical texts and static exhibits, making it better suited for older students and adults interested in Chinese history.
The main courtyards are mostly flat and paved, but several exhibition rooms and study halls have raised wooden thresholds and stone steps that restrict full wheelchair access.
Arriving right at opening time in the morning on a weekday provides the quietest experience, as the site is generally less crowded than the main commercial streets of the ancient town.
Bring comfortable walking shoes for the uneven stone pathways in the courtyards, and consider a translation app on your phone as most exhibit placards are only in Chinese.
Combined ancient town tickets are generally valid for a single entry to each included venue, including the School Hall, within one consecutive calendar day of first use.
There are no cafes or food vendors inside the historical School Hall complex itself, so visitors should purchase snacks and water from the nearby commercial streets before entering.

About Cicheng School Hall

The Cixi Academy, also known as the Examination Hall and the Examination Hall, was a place for selecting talents at the grassroots level of the feudal imperial examination system. Cixi Town has been a place of tranquility and beauty since ancient times, with beautiful humanities and students carrying pencils and writing books. In the 15th year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1835), the local sage Zheng Tingrong and his son generously donated 24,000 silver dollars to build the Cixi Academy. The entire building faces north and south, and consists of 117 houses including the main gate, ceremonial gate, hall, corridor, and side room. From the perspective of layout design, it is divided into the front yard and the back yard, which is a typical Qing Dynasty three-courtyard and two-courtyard building. The front yard is the main gate and the ceremonial gate. There is a screen wall and two east and west gates in front of the main gate; there are four small houses on the right side of the main gate, and a land temple on the left side, which is a place to worship the land god. There are six gatehouses on the right side of the ceremonial gate. The second entrance is divided into two corridors on the left and right for the examination room. The middle of the bungalow is the entrance for candidates to enter the examination hall, commonly known as the "Dragon Gate". The doors and windows of the examination rooms are all the same. There are 69 rooms in total. Every three rooms have a wall, and a small patio is left outside. Only the south side is used for access and lighting and ventilation. The entire examination room can ensure sufficient light and avoid the suffering of wind and rain. Each examination room has four examination tables and four stools. During the examination, this space of more than ten square meters is divided into four grids, with one person sitting in each grid. It looks like a row of birdcage-like buildings, called houses. You can imagine the grand scene of students gathering here in these small examination rooms, writing at their desks and taking exams to seek fame. The main hall is a lobby with five rooms, and there are four side rooms on the left and right. There is a patio and five main rooms in the third entrance. There are also five rooms facing south as the front row of the examination, where candidates hand in their papers and examiners seal their papers. Three rooms of Han (Yu) Changli Temple are built in the west, and three rooms of Huang (Zhen) Wenjie Temple are built in the east. There are five kitchens in the northeast corner. The construction project took one year to complete and put into use. The examination room was fully equipped with all the items needed for an examination (examination tables, screens, etc.), and was hailed as an "unprecedented" event for the Cixi imperial examination.
