About Matsumoto Castle Town Walking Tour Day Tours

Step back in time on the Matsumoto Castle Town Walking Tour, where you will explore historic streets and Japan's oldest five-tiered castle keep with an expert English-speaking guide. Discover the charming Nawate Street and Nakamachi district while uncovering fascinating samurai history and local culture. This immersive day tour is perfect for travellers seeking a deep dive into Japan's feudal past without the hassle of navigating alone.

Local Legends & Stories

Local lore tells of a ghostly samurai princess who allegedly haunts the castle's upper floors, a legend that led to the construction of a dedicated shrine within the keep to pacify her spirit. Additionally, the abundance of frog statues on Nawate Street stems from the area's history as a waterway, with frogs symbolizing safe travels and the return of loved ones.

Must Do Experiences

  • Climb the steep, historic wooden staircases of Matsumoto Castle to enjoy panoramic views of the Japanese Alps from the top floor.

  • Stroll along Nawate Street to admire the quirky frog statues and browse antique shops for unique vintage souvenirs.

  • Wander through the Nakamachi Historic District to see beautifully preserved earthen-walled kura storehouses and traditional craft shops.

  • Listen to captivating tales of samurai life and local folklore from your knowledgeable English-speaking guide.

Hidden Gems

  • Look for the hidden moon-viewing pavilion on the castle grounds, which offers a rare, unobstructed reflection of the keep in the moat.

  • Visit the small, easily missed Matsumoto City Museum of Art nearby to see the whimsical, avant-garde works of local artist Yayoi Kusama.

  • Seek out the traditional miso and soy sauce breweries tucked away in the Nakamachi district for authentic, locally made edible souvenirs.

What Makes it Special

  • Skip the confusion of public transport and language barriers with a dedicated English-speaking guide who brings the samurai era to life.

  • Gain exclusive insights into the architectural brilliance of Japan's oldest surviving five-tiered, six-story wooden castle keep.

  • Experience a perfectly curated blend of iconic historical landmarks and charming, lesser-known local shopping streets in one seamless tour.

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

The best time to visit is early morning during the spring cherry blossom season or the vibrant autumn foliage months of October and November to avoid the heaviest crowds. Arriving right when the castle opens allows you to climb the steep stairs before the midday rush and captures the best natural lighting for photography. Winter visits offer stunning snow-capped views of the Japanese Alps reflecting in the moat, though you must dress warmly for the freezing Nagano temperatures.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • Capture the iconic reflection of the black castle keep in the moat from the south side during the golden hour just after sunrise or before sunset.

  • Use a wide-angle lens when shooting inside the castle keep, as the interior spaces are quite dim and narrow, and flash photography is generally prohibited.

  • Frame your shots of Nawate Street using the traditional lanterns and frog statues in the foreground to add depth and a touch of whimsical local charm.

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

Always remove your shoes before entering the castle keep and traditional shops, and ensure your socks are clean and free of holes as a sign of respect. Speak in hushed tones while inside the historic buildings and avoid touching the ancient wooden walls or structural pillars. Tipping is not customary in Japan, so simply offer a sincere bow and a polite thank you to your guide at the end of the tour.

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • The Matsumoto Castle Cherry Blossom Festival in early April features spectacular evening illuminations and food stalls lining the castle moat.

  • The Matsumoto Castle Taiko Festival in late July fills the air with the thunderous, rhythmic beats of traditional Japanese drums performed by local and international troupes.

  • The Ice Sculpture Festival held in February transforms the castle grounds into a winter wonderland with massive, intricately carved ice statues illuminated at night.

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Hold onto the handrails firmly while climbing the castle's extremely steep wooden staircases, which have a gradient of over 60 degrees.

  • Watch your step on the uneven cobblestone paths in the Nakamachi district, especially after rainfall when the stones can become slippery.

  • Stay hydrated and use sun protection during the hot and humid Japanese summer months, as much of the walking tour is exposed to direct sunlight.

Visitor Information

Entry Fee

Your tour package includes the standard admission ticket to Matsumoto Castle and the adjacent City Museum, saving you the hassle of purchasing them separately on-site. Children under the age of six typically enter for free, while discounted rates for older children and seniors are automatically applied at checkout when you select the appropriate traveller profile.

Visit Duration

Allocate around two to three hours for the complete walking tour to comfortably explore the castle interior, stroll the historic districts, and take plenty of photos. If you are short on time, prioritize climbing the main castle keep first thing in the morning to beat the crowds, then do a quick walk through Nawate Street for a glimpse of local culture.

Accessibility

While the castle grounds, Nawate Street, and Nakamachi district are largely flat and wheelchair accessible, the interior of the main castle keep is not due to its steep, narrow wooden staircases. Wheelchair users and those with limited mobility can still enjoy the beautiful exterior architecture, the moat views, and the surrounding gardens with the assistance of their guide.

The predecessor of Matsumoto Castle was Fukashi Castle. At the beginning of the Muromachi period, Ogasawara Sadamune, a retainer of the Ashikaga Takahashi clan, was entrusted with the guardianship of Shinano, and the castle was built. In the 17th year of Tenten (1548), when Takeda Shingen of Kohi defeated Ogasawara Chang of Forest City, this place was used as a base for advancing from Higashi Shinano to Kitashinano. The scale of Shenzhi City gradually expanded. During this period, Kiso Yoshimao, Ogasawara Zhenzhong, Ogasawara Zhenqing, and Ogasawara Hidezheng served as the city lords of Shenzhi City respectively. After the fall of the Takeda clan, Ogasawara Masaki, who inherited his father's land, changed the name of Fukashi Castle to Matsumoto Castle. In the 18th year of Tensho (1590), Toyotomi Hideyoshi destroyed the Hojo clan in Odawara, entered Kanto, and transferred the city to Ishikawa. After that, Toyotomi received a salary of 80,000 stone and began to build a five-story and six-tiered tower. It was not until the era of Kang Chang, the son of Shuzheng, that it was finally completed (that is, the prototype of the existing Songyuan Castle). The Tsukimi and Tatsumi turrets used in the castle were built in the early Edo period. After that, he went through the Ogasawara clan, the Toda Matsudaira clan, the Horita clan, and the Mizuno clan. Matsumoto Castle is a typical flat city. The castles of Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sannomaru are roughly square. The tower is set in the southwest of Honmaru, surrounded by the concave Ninomaru lacking the north, and surrounded by the square Sannomaru on the outside.
