About Matsumoto Discovery - Half Day Walking Tour Day Tours

Step back in time on the Matsumoto Discovery Half Day Walking Tour, where you will explore one of Japan's most stunning original castles and its charming surrounding streets. Led by an insightful English-speaking guide, this immersive walking experience unveils the rich samurai history, hidden cultural spots, and delightful local cafes of Matsumoto. It is the perfect way to experience the authentic heart of Nagano Prefecture at a relaxed, leisurely pace.

Local Legends & Stories

Local lore speaks of the castle's moon-viewing tower being a favorite spot for feudal lords to compose poetry under the harvest moon, while legends of the lunar calendar tell of a goddess who blessed the castle's builders with a successful completion after they promised to hold an annual moon-viewing festival in her honor.

Must Do Experiences

  • Climb the steep wooden staircases of Matsumoto Castle to admire the original architecture and panoramic views of the Japanese Alps.

  • Stroll through the historic Nakamachi merchant district to browse traditional craft shops, local eateries, and charming cafes.

  • Listen to captivating tales of samurai culture and local history directly from your knowledgeable English-speaking guide.

  • Cross the iconic red Uzuki Bridge for the quintessential postcard view of the castle reflecting in the moat.

Hidden Gems

  • Discover the hidden moon-viewing pavilion inside the castle, a rare architectural feature designed specifically for admiring the autumn moon.

  • Wander slightly off the main tourist paths in the Nakamachi district to find century-old sake breweries and miso makers that still operate today.

  • Look out for the subtle traditional namako wall patterns on the old storehouses, which were designed to be fireproof and protect valuable goods.

What Makes it Special

  • Unlike many reconstructed sites, Matsumoto Castle is one of only five original castles remaining in Japan, offering a truly authentic historical experience.

  • The tour combines iconic landmark visits with intimate neighborhood walks, giving you a well-rounded perspective of both feudal and modern local life.

  • Having a dedicated local guide means you get personalized insights and stories that you would easily miss if exploring the castle grounds alone.

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

Early morning is the best time of day to avoid crowds and capture beautiful reflections of the castle in the moat. Spring offers breathtaking cherry blossoms framing the black keep, while autumn provides a stunning contrast of fiery red maple leaves, making both seasons the most picturesque and popular times to visit.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • Capture the classic reflection shot of the black castle keep from the south side of the moat, ideally during the golden hour just after sunrise or before sunset.

  • Photography is generally permitted inside the castle, but be mindful of low lighting conditions and avoid using flash to protect the historic artifacts.

  • Frame your shots of the Nakamachi district by focusing on the traditional white grid walls and the gentle curves of the canals for a moody, historical aesthetic.

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

When entering the castle keep and certain traditional shops, you will be required to remove your shoes, so wearing clean, presentable socks is highly recommended. Tipping is not customary in Japan, and a sincere thank you or a slight bow is the best way to show appreciation to your guide and local shopkeepers. Please speak in hushed tones inside the castle and avoid touching the ancient wooden pillars and exhibits.

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • The Matsumoto Castle Cherry Blossom Festival in April features spectacular evening illuminations and food stalls lining the moat.

  • The Matsumoto Castle Taiko Festival in late summer fills the grounds with the thunderous, rhythmic beats of traditional Japanese drumming.

  • The Ice Sculpture Festival in winter transforms the castle park into a magical wonderland with intricate, towering ice carvings illuminated at night.

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Hold onto the handrails tightly when navigating the castle's steep, sixty-degree wooden staircases, especially when descending.

  • Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun during summer months, as the walking portions of the tour offer limited shade.

  • Watch your step on the uneven cobblestone and stone-paved paths in the traditional merchant districts to prevent tripping.

Visitor Information

Entry Fee

Your tour package conveniently includes the entry and admission fee for Matsumoto Castle, so there is no need to purchase separate tickets at the gate. Children under a certain age may join at a reduced rate, but please check the specific booking options as infant tickets usually do not include castle admission if they are below the required age.

Visit Duration

This guided half-day walking tour typically lasts around three to four hours, providing ample time to thoroughly explore both the castle and the merchant district. If you are short on time after the tour concludes, prioritize a quick stroll through the Nakamachi district to grab a local snack or souvenir before heading to your next destination.

Accessibility

While the castle grounds, parks, and surrounding merchant streets are largely wheelchair accessible, the interior of the main castle keep is unfortunately not due to steep, narrow staircases and the requirement to remove shoes. Wheelchair users and those with mobility challenges can still enjoy the beautiful exterior views, the moon-viewing pavilion exterior, and the guided neighborhood walks.

The predecessor of Matsumoto Castle was Fukashi Castle. At the beginning of the Muromachi period, Ogasawara Sadamune, a retainer of the Ashikaga Takahashi clan, was entrusted with the guardianship of Shinano, and the castle was built. In the 17th year of Tenten (1548), when Takeda Shingen of Kohi defeated Ogasawara Chang of Forest City, this place was used as a base for advancing from Higashi Shinano to Kitashinano. The scale of Shenzhi City gradually expanded. During this period, Kiso Yoshimao, Ogasawara Zhenzhong, Ogasawara Zhenqing, and Ogasawara Hidezheng served as the city lords of Shenzhi City respectively. After the fall of the Takeda clan, Ogasawara Masaki, who inherited his father's land, changed the name of Fukashi Castle to Matsumoto Castle. In the 18th year of Tensho (1590), Toyotomi Hideyoshi destroyed the Hojo clan in Odawara, entered Kanto, and transferred the city to Ishikawa. After that, Toyotomi received a salary of 80,000 stone and began to build a five-story and six-tiered tower. It was not until the era of Kang Chang, the son of Shuzheng, that it was finally completed (that is, the prototype of the existing Songyuan Castle). The Tsukimi and Tatsumi turrets used in the castle were built in the early Edo period. After that, he went through the Ogasawara clan, the Toda Matsudaira clan, the Horita clan, and the Mizuno clan. Matsumoto Castle is a typical flat city. The castles of Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sannomaru are roughly square. The tower is set in the southwest of Honmaru, surrounded by the concave Ninomaru lacking the north, and surrounded by the square Sannomaru on the outside.
