Local Legends & Stories

According to ancient Japanese mythology, Amanohashidate was originally a celestial bridge connecting heaven and earth, which fell to the sea when the creator god Izanagi fell asleep. Locals believe that viewing the sandbar upside down through your legs transforms the pine-covered spit into a dragon flying into the sky, bringing good fortune to those who witness it.

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

Early morning during the autumn months offers the clearest skies and spectacular foliage contrasting with the blue waters of Miyazu Bay. Spring is equally beautiful with cherry blossoms framing the sandbar, though you should arrive right at opening time to avoid the midday crowds at the ropeway and observation decks.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • Capture the iconic Hiryukan flying dragon view of the sandbar from the Mt. Monju observation deck during the golden hour just after sunrise for the best lighting.

  • Use a polarizing filter when shooting from the Kinosaki Ropeway to reduce glare off the Sea of Japan and enhance the vibrant green of the pine trees.

  • When photographing the intricate straw crafts or the Onsen Temple treasures, be sure to check for flash restrictions and always ask artisans for permission before taking close-up portraits.

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

When visiting the Onsen Temple, remember to bow slightly before entering the main hall and speak in hushed tones to respect those praying. During your straw work experience, it is polite to express gratitude to the artisan guiding you, and remember that tipping is not customary in Japan.

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • The Amanohashidate Illumination event in winter transforms the pine-covered sandbar into a magical, glowing landscape visible from the observation decks.

  • The Kinosaki Onsen Spring Festival features traditional dances and local food stalls, offering a vibrant cultural backdrop to your ropeway and temple visits.

  • Autumn foliage season in November brings special extended hours to the Kinosaki Ropeway, allowing visitors to witness the fiery red and gold leaves from above.

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Hold onto the handrails tightly while riding the monorail and lift up Mt. Monju, especially if travelling with young children.

  • Stay within the designated viewing areas at the observation decks and do not lean over the railings to get a better photograph.

Overview

Miyazu Bay, Miyazu City, located in northern Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, has a special natural scenery. Due to tectonic shifts, a sandbar topography was formed in the sea, and in Japan it is called Tango's Amanohashidate, and along with Aki's Miyajima (currently Itsukushima) and Mutsu's Matsushima, it is called one of the "Three Scenic Views of Japan."The name Amanohashidate comes from the fact that if you turn your back on the sandbar from the two hills of Kasamatsu Park, located at the northern end of the sandbar, and Hiryukan, located at the southern end, and look back with your head between your legs, the sandbar appears to be stretching diagonally toward the sky. There is an observatory on Mt. Monju that overlooks Amanohashidate, and on top of the mountain there is a Ferris wheel and attractions that people of all ages can enjoy. Amanohashidate seen from there is called "Hiryukan" because it looks like a dragon dancing in the sky, and you can see the vivid scenery of Amanohashidate. You can take the lift or monorail to the observation deck.
