Local Legends & Stories
The Tottori Sand Dunes were formed over 100,000 years ago by sand carried from the Chugoku Mountains by the Sendai River and shaped by ocean currents and winds. Local folklore often speaks of the shifting dunes as a living landscape, constantly reshaping the boundary between the earth and the Sea of Japan.

Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The best time to take this tour is during autumn, from September to November, when the weather is pleasantly cool, the skies are clear, and the seasonal pear-picking experience is in full swing. Early morning departures are standard, but the midday sun provides the best lighting for the sand dunes and the clearest visibility for the coastal cruise.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Capture the vastness of the Tottori Sand Dunes by including a person in your frame for scale, and look for the beautiful ripple patterns created by the wind.
-
During the Uradome Coast cruise, head to the upper deck or the front of the boat for unobstructed, glare-free shots of the dramatic sea caves and pine-covered cliffs.
-
The Sand Museum allows photography of the sand sculptures, but avoid using flash and be mindful of other visitors when setting up your shot.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
When visiting the Sand Museum and other indoor facilities, it is customary to speak softly and avoid touching the delicate sand sculptures. If you participate in the pear-picking experience, listen carefully to the farmer's instructions on how to properly harvest the fruit to avoid damaging the trees, and always express your gratitude with a polite arigatou gozaimasu.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
The Tottori Sand Dunes host the spectacular Sand Sculpture Illumination event during the winter months, where the dunes are lit up with magical light displays.
-
Late summer and autumn feature the highly anticipated pear-picking season, allowing visitors to taste Tottori's famous Nijisseiki and Shinkansen pear varieties straight from the orchard.
-
The Sand Museum unveils a brand-new, massive sand sculpture theme every spring, making it a unique draw for repeat visitors wanting to see the latest artistic masterpiece.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
The sand dunes can become surprisingly steep and hot under the midday sun, so stay hydrated and stick to the designated walking paths to avoid slipping.
-
During the Uradome Coast cruise, remain seated while the boat is in motion and keep your hands and camera straps inside the railings to prevent accidents.
-
Apply sunscreen and wear a hat when exploring the open dunes, as the reflective sand can intensify UV exposure and cause quick sunburns.
