About Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park
Nestled in the rolling hills of Gilroy, California, Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park is a one-of-a-kind destination where nature and fun grow together. Built around breathtaking living Circus Trees sculpted over decades, this park offers more than 40 gentle rides and attractions perfect for families with children of all ages.
Local Legends & Stories
Founder Michael Gilroy, a former toy store owner, spent years grafting and training trees into the mesmerizing Circus Trees that now define the park. His vision was to create a family-friendly alternative to loud, ride-heavy theme parks — a place where nature, creativity, and gentle fun coexist.
Must Do Experiences
-
Walk beneath the iconic 27 Circus Trees — living topiary sculptures grafted and trained by founder Michael Gilroy into spirals, loops, and woven lattices. Ride the Garden Railway, a scenic train journey that winds through themed gardens and past playful water features. Splash through the interactive water play areas on warm days, a hit with kids of all ages. Take the Monorail for a relaxed aerial tour of the park's lush landscapes and themed zones.
Hidden Gems
-
Visit the Circus Trees early in the morning when the light is soft and the crowds are thin — it feels like stepping into a living fairy tale. Explore the themed garden areas between rides; each zone is designed with its own botanical story and hidden details. Stop by the gift shop for locally made garlic products — Gilroy is famously the 'Garlic Capital of the World.'
What Makes it Special
-
The park is uniquely built around 27 living Circus Trees — real trees trained and grafted into extraordinary shapes over decades, making it unlike any conventional theme park. Rides are deliberately designed to be gentle and inclusive, so toddlers and grandparents can enjoy the experience together without frustration. The seamless blend of botanical gardens, themed landscapes, and family-friendly attractions creates a calm, memorable atmosphere that prioritizes connection over thrills.
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The best time to visit is during the spring and early summer when the gardens are in full bloom and the weather is pleasant. Weekdays outside of school holidays offer the shortest lines and a more peaceful experience. Water play areas are typically open from late spring through summer, making those months ideal for families with young children.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-

The Garden Railway and monorail offer great photo opportunities of the park's themed landscapes from unique angles. Don't miss the reflective water features and colorful flower beds scattered throughout the grounds — they make for beautiful family portraits.
Cultural Etiquette

Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
Garlic Festival — held annually in July, this iconic event celebrates Gilroy's garlic heritage with food, music, and family fun. Holiday celebrations including festive light displays and seasonal themed activities during the winter months. Summer concert series and special garden events that bring the park to life with music and entertainment.
Important Guidelines & Safety

-
All rides are designed for young children, but parents should supervise kids near water play areas and follow posted height and safety guidelines. Notes
Overview
Most theme parks are built around rides. This one was built around trees — specifically the twenty-seven Circus Trees, living sculptures that a farmer named Gilroy grafted and trained decades ago into loops, spirals, ladders and woven lattices. They are still growing, and still remarkable to stand beneath.
Around the gardens sit more than forty rides pitched deliberately gentle: a train, a monorail, a log flume, small coasters and dozens of spinning and rocking attractions that a toddler and a grandparent can genuinely enjoy together. Water play areas open in the warmer months, and there is a lake at the centre of it all.
Mature trees shade much of the site, which makes summer afternoons here far more pleasant than at most Californian parks. The pace is unhurried, the crowds are modest, and the whole place has the feel of a large public garden that happens to have rides in it.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park
The park's identity comes from its gardens: 27 Circus Trees, grafted and trained into loops, spirals and lattices decades ago, sit alongside themed botanical areas and a small lake. Rides are deliberately family-scaled — a train, monorail, log flume, small coasters and dozens of spinning and rocking attractions that toddlers and grandparents can share.
Water play zones and splash areas operate in warmer months, so swimwear and a towel are worth mentioning to guests. Mature trees give real shade across much of the site, which makes summer visits more comfortable than at most Californian parks. Four to six hours is usually enough, and the park's non-profit status means proceeds support its educational and horticultural programmes.
