Overview

A few minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, and about as far from it in spirit as possible, this Smithsonian-affiliated museum tells the story of the Nevada Test Site — the desert basin where the United States detonated more than nine hundred nuclear devices over four decades.

Galleries move from the Manhattan Project through the years of atmospheric testing, when mushroom clouds were visible from Las Vegas hotel rooftops, into the Cold War and the eventual test bans. Declassified documents, radiation monitoring equipment, a section of the Berlin Wall and recorded testimony from scientists, soldiers and affected Downwinders fill the cases.

The Ground Zero Theater seats you inside a replica observation bunker for a simulated above-ground detonation, with the sound and the air-blast reproduced around you. The tone throughout is documentary rather than sensational, and it lingers for a long time afterwards.

Plan for approximately 1 to 2 hours to thoroughly explore all the galleries and take in every exhibit at a comfortable pace.

Galleries move chronologically from the Manhattan Project through decades of testing in the Nevada desert to the politics of the Cold War and the eventual test-ban treaties. Exhibits mix declassified documents, test equipment, radiation monitoring gear, a section of the Berlin Wall and first-person accounts from the scientists, soldiers and ""Downwinders"" affected. The Ground Zero Theater seats guests in a replica observation bunker for a simulated atmospheric detonation, with sound and air-blast effects.

The tone is documentary rather than sensational, and much of the content is text-heavy, so it suits older children and adults more than young families. Allow around two hours. The museum sits in an office-district setting with free on-site parking, and its Smithsonian affiliation means the temporary exhibition programme changes regularly — worth checking what is showing when advising repeat visitors.
