Manila's history, Boracay's beaches, and Cebu's canyoneering — here is exactly how to fit all three into one well-paced week.

Seven days is the minimum for a Philippines trip that actually shows you the range of what the country does well — the history and food scene of Manila, the powder-white sand of Boracay, and the waterfalls-and-reefs adventure side of Cebu. It's an ambitious week, involving two domestic flights, but every leg earns its place. I've run this route with groups ranging from honeymooners to backpackers, and the pacing below works for both.

Day 1-2: Manila

Day 1: Intramuros, Rizal Park, and Binondo

Start in the old walled city, Intramuros — Fort Santiago (₱75 entry), where national hero Jose Rizal was imprisoned before his execution, is genuinely moving, not just a photo stop. Walk the old Spanish colonial streets, then head to Rizal Park (free), a huge green space commemorating Rizal with a daily flag-lowering ceremony.

In the afternoon, do a Binondo food walk — this is the oldest Chinatown in the world, established in 1594, and the food is outstanding: siopao (steamed buns), fresh lumpia, and Eng Bee Tin's hopia pastries. A guided walking food tour (₱1,500-2,500) is worth it here purely for the vendor recommendations you'd otherwise miss.

Evening: Poblacion in Makati is Manila's best nightlife district — a genuinely dense strip of rooftop bars, craft cocktail spots, and late-night food that rivals any Southeast Asian capital's nightlife scene.

4-Wheeler (ATV) Adventure in Rizal/Manila
An ATV tour is a fun half-day break from Manila's museums and churches

Day 2: Manila Ocean Park and an ATV break

Manila Ocean Park (₱499 general entry) is a solid family-friendly oceanarium right by Rizal Park if you have kids or just want an air-conditioned midday break from the heat. For something more active, an ATV tour around Manila's outskirts is a fun way to burn off energy before your flight south — genuinely popular with groups wanting an adrenaline hit that isn't beach-based.

Pro tip: Manila traffic is notoriously bad — budget 45-90 minutes for any cross-city trip, especially between 7-9am and 5-8pm. Grab (the regional ride-hailing app) is far more reliable than street taxis and has fixed upfront pricing, which avoids the meter disputes taxis are known for.

Day 3-4: Boracay

Fly from Manila to Caticlan (Godofredo P. Ramos Airport, the closer option) or Kalibo, then transfer by van and boat to Boracay island — arrange this transfer in advance rather than negotiating on arrival, it removes a genuine stress point after a flight.

Station 2D'Mall, restaurants, most crowded, centralNightlife, dining, convenience

Day 3: Island hopping and sunset sailing

A half-day island hopping tour typically covers Crystal Cove Island (caves and a small beach), Puka Shell Beach on the island's quieter northern end (better sand, fewer people, worth the extra 20-minute ride), and snorkelling at a reef stop. In the evening, a sunset sailing tour on a traditional paraw sailboat off White Beach is one of the most purely relaxing hours you'll spend in the Philippines — book ahead in peak season (December-April) as boats fill up.

A professional photography session on White Beach is worth it for the sunset light alone

Day 4: Ariel's Point and D'Mall

Ariel's Point is a cliff-diving and snorkelling spot with jump platforms ranging from 15 to 45 feet — genuinely thrilling and well-run, with a beachside lunch included in most day-trip packages. In the evening, D'Mall in Station 2 is Boracay's dining and shopping hub — good seafood, reasonable prices, and a lively but not overwhelming atmosphere.

Pro tip: If you're serious about photos, book a professional beach photography session for the last hour before sunset (around 5-6pm) — the golden light on White Beach's sand is genuinely spectacular, and a photographer who knows the beach's best angles will get you results your phone camera can't match.

Day 5-7: Cebu

Fly from Caticlan/Kalibo back through Manila or via a direct connection to Cebu (routes vary by season — check connections when booking). Arrange your Cebu airport transfer ahead of time; Mactan-Cebu International Airport is on a separate island connected by bridge to Cebu City, and taxi queues can be long at peak arrival times.

Lapu-Lapu City (CEB) Airport Transfer (1 Way to Cebu Downtown)
Arrange your Cebu transfer in advance so you're not negotiating taxi fares straight off the plane

Day 5: Kawasan Falls Canyoneering

This is, without exaggeration, the single best adventure day-trip in the Philippines. Based in Badian, about 3 hours south of Cebu City, canyoneering takes you down a river canyon through a series of cliff jumps (5-40 feet, all optional heights), natural water slides, and swims through turquoise pools, ending at the multi-tiered Kawasan Falls itself. It's a full-day, physically demanding activity — go with a licensed guide (all commercial operators use them, it's mandatory) and expect to be genuinely soaked, muddy, and thrilled by the end.

Kawasan Falls canyoneering is the single best adventure activity in the Philippines, full stop

Day 6: Moalboal sardine run or Oslob whale sharks

Two very different options, and you should pick based on your ethics as much as your interests. Moalboal's sardine run — a massive, dense school of sardines that lives permanently just off Panagsama Beach — is one of the best snorkel-accessible marine spectacles in the world, no boat required for the classic shot, and entirely wild with zero animal welfare concerns.

Oslob's whale shark encounters, by contrast, involve boats chumming the water daily to keep whale sharks present for tourist swims — it's hugely popular and does generate local income, but it's also widely criticised by marine biologists for altering wild whale shark feeding behaviour and increasing boat-strike injury risk to the animals. I'd steer most travellers toward Moalboal instead; if you do choose Oslob, go with an operator who enforces strict distance rules and short swim windows.

Day 7: Tops viewpoint and Lechon before departure

Tops (Top of Cebu) up in the Busay hills gives a panoramic view over Cebu City and the strait — a good, easy final-morning activity (₱100 entry, taxi up recommended over the steep walk). No Cebu trip is complete without lechon (whole roast pig) — CnT Lechon is the most famous local chain and genuinely lives up to the hype; grab a takeaway plate for lunch before your flight home.

Inter-Island Flights vs Ferry

For this specific route, flights are the right call over ferries — Manila to Boracay and Boracay to Cebu ferry connections exist but involve multiple transfers and 8+ hour journeys versus 60-90 minute flights. Budget carriers (Cebu Pacific, AirAsia Philippines, Philippine Airlines) run these routes frequently; book at least 3-4 weeks ahead in peak season for reasonable fares.

Budget Breakdown (per person, mid-range)

CategoryEstimated Cost (7 days)
Domestic flights (2 legs)₱4,500 - 9,000
Accommodation (mid-range)₱21,000 - 35,000
Food₱7,000 - 12,000
Activities & tours₱8,000 - 15,000
Local transport₱3,000 - 5,000
Total₱43,500 - 76,000 (~S$1,050 - S$1,850)

Best Time to Visit

December to May is dry season and the safest bet, with January-February offering the best balance of good weather and lower crowds/prices than the December-April peak. June to November is typhoon season — the Visayas region (Boracay, Cebu) can still be pleasant, but monitor forecasts closely, especially July-October.

Safety and Money Tips

Carry small peso denominations for tricycles, sari-sari stores, and tips — many small vendors can't break large bills. Use Grab over street taxis in Manila and Cebu City. Keep beach bags off unattended sand at Boracay and Cebu beach spots, as with any tourist beach. Tap water isn't potable outside major hotels — bottled or filtered water throughout.

Closing Thoughts

This route is a lot of movement for one week, but it works precisely because each leg is so different from the last — Manila's density and history, Boracay's pure beach relaxation, Cebu's adventure-and-reef combination. If you only have time to cut one stop, cut a day from Manila rather than shortening Boracay or Cebu — the islands are why people fly this far in the first place.
