About Hangzhou West Lake|Hefang Street|3-hour Hanfu and Hairpin Flower Photo Shoot at Xiaohezhijie (includes costume and makeup + 1-on-1 professional photographer)

Step back in time with a 3-hour Hanfu and hairpin flower photo shoot along the enchanting Xiaohezhijie in Hangzhou. Dressed in exquisite traditional attire with professional makeup and styling, you will glide through ancient streets and stunning West Lake scenery as a dedicated photographer captures every magical moment.

Local Legends & Stories

Hangzhou's West Lake has inspired poets and artists for over a thousand years, including the legendary tale of White Snake, whose romance unfolded along these very waters. Xiaohezhijie, meaning 'Street on the Small River,' was once a bustling merchant quarter where scholars and courtesans wandered beneath paper lanterns.

Must Do Experiences

  • Stroll through the lantern-lit alleys of Xiaohezhijie in full Hanfu regalia, letting the ancient architecture frame your portraits. Pose by the shimmering West Lake with hairpin flowers adorning your hair for breathtaking lakeside shots. Explore the traditional shops and bridges of Hefang Street while dressed in centuries-old costume, immersing yourself in Hangzhou's living history.

Hidden Gems

  • Visit early morning or late afternoon when the light is softest and the streets are least crowded for more intimate photo opportunities. The small side alleys branching off Xiaohezhijie offer hidden courtyards and classical garden corners that most tourists miss. Ask your photographer about the traditional stone bridges near the lake that provide stunning reflections as backdrops.

What Makes it Special

  • Full 1-on-1 professional photography service with a dedicated guide ensuring every shot captures your best angles and expressions. Includes both Hanfu costume and traditional hairpin flower styling, two irreplaceable elements of Chinese intangible cultural heritage. Receive 3 professionally retouched photos plus 30 original negatives as keepsakes from your cultural photoshoot experience.

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

Spring (March to May) offers blooming flowers and pleasant temperatures perfect for outdoor photography. Autumn (September to November) brings golden osmanthus fragrance and soft light ideal for Hanfu portraits. Early mornings or late afternoons during any season provide the most flattering natural light and fewer crowds.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • Hold a traditional fan or silk scarf as a prop to add elegance and authenticity to your Hanfu portraits. Practice graceful hand positions and slow, deliberate movements that complement the flowing fabric of traditional attire. Look toward the light source rather than directly into it for the most flattering and ethereal results.

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

Hanfu represents thousands of years of Chinese clothing heritage; wearing it with respect and understanding enhances the experience. Hairpin flowers, an intangible cultural heritage skill, symbolize beauty and prosperity in traditional Chinese culture. Learn a few basic phrases in Mandarin to interact warmly with local shopkeepers along the historic street.

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • Lantern Festival in the first lunar month transforms Xiaohezhijie into a glowing wonderland of traditional lanterns. West Lake Song Dynasty Impression Show runs seasonally with cultural performances that make stunning photo backdrops. Osmanthus Festival in autumn fills the area with fragrance and features special market stalls and cultural activities.

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Keep personal belongings secure in crowded areas of Hefang Street and use the provided storage during costume changes. Wear sunscreen and stay hydrated during outdoor sessions, especially in summer months. Follow your photographer's guidance when walking near the lake edge to ensure safety on uneven surfaces.

You will first meet at the studio to select your Hanfu outfit and undergo professional makeup and floral hairpin styling. Afterward, you will walk with your photographer to the designated scenic spots along Xiaohezhijie and Hefang Street for the guided photo session.
The meeting point is the partner studio located in the Gongshu District near Xiaohezhijie, which is accessible by taking a taxi or using the Hangzhou Metro to the nearest station followed by a short walk.
The hairpin flower styling and included costumes are specifically designed and tailored for adult women. Male travelers and children can accompany the group but cannot participate in the makeup and costume portion of this specific package.
The historic streets feature uneven cobblestones, traditional stone bridges, and narrow pathways that are difficult to navigate with wheelchairs or strollers. Participants must be able to walk comfortably for up to two hours on uneven terrain.

Light rain may still allow for outdoor shooting, but in the event of heavy rain or severe weather, the session can be rescheduled to an alternative date or moved to an indoor studio setting.
The photographer will provide a selection of unedited preview images shortly after the shoot for you to choose your favorites. The final high-resolution, retouched images are then delivered digitally via email or a cloud storage link within a few weeks.

You can visit West Lake by walking, taking a Cruise, riding an electric car, or driving or cycling. Among them, the electric car is convenient and labor-saving. There are many places to rent public bicycles along the shore of West Lake. If you want to take a boat tour, there are nearly 10 docks on the lakeside, with various boats and routes. It is recommended to take a boat to the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon Mirroring the Moon in the center of the lake, and take a good look at the scenery of West Lake on the boat. Or you can hire a hand-rowed boat by the lakeside and let the boatman row you around the lake, which is more free.

Northern scenery

There are many scenic spots on the north bank of West Lake. Usually, you start from the Broken Bridge and Residual Snow in the northeast corner and head west to Yuewang Temple. You can walk along the Baidi Causeway to Gushan, visit cultural attractions such as Xiling Seal Society, Zhejiang Provincial Museum, China Seal Museum, and Fanghe Pavilion, eat authentic West Lake Vinegar Fish at Louwailou, and get off the island from Xiling Bridge. Not far away are Yuewang Temple and Quyuan Fenghe.

If it is a hot summer day, it is recommended to walk along Beishan Road and hide under the dense shade of trees to see the curve of the Broken Bridge and the swaying willows on the opposite side of the Bai Causeway. There are many entrances along the road leading to Baoshishan Mountain, where you can climb the mountain to see the scenery, and then go down the mountain to Yuewang Temple. There are many small shops in Yuewang Square where you can eat, and the Impression of West Lake performance here in the evening is also worth seeing. If you have enough time and energy, you can also go up Su Causeway from here and walk to enjoy the panoramic view of West Lake.

Southeast coast (Hubin-Nanshan Road)

Another area with a concentration of scenic spots is Hubin Road-Nanshan Road on the southeast coast. Hubin Road is at the junction of downtown Hangzhou and West Lake Attraction. You can see the scenery of West Lake, there is also a pier for West Lake Cruise, and there is also the iconic musical fountain. The advantage of Hubin Road is that it can quickly reach the business district in the city center from the Attraction, which is suitable for tourists who are in a hurry to stay for a short time.

Go south from Hubin Road and along Nanshan Road. You can visit scenic spots such as Orioles Singing in the Willows, Changqiao, Leifeng Pagoda, Nanping Evening Bell, and Huagang Fish Watching. The distance between adjacent scenic spots is not far, so you can walk. Tour buses and public buses are also very convenient. You can choose a few to visit in one day according to your preferences. Among them, Leifeng Pagoda and Nanping Evening Bell can be arranged in the evening. Listening to the bells in Jingci Temple and overlooking the night view of West Lake from Leifeng Pagoda are both great experiences.
