Local Legends & Stories
Ayutthaya was once the capital of the Siamese Kingdom for over 400 years and rivalled London and Paris as one of the world's largest and most prosperous cities before its fall in 1767. Local legends speak of the city's golden age when it was a thriving cosmopolitan hub where European traders, Chinese merchants, and Japanese samurai walked the same streets, a mystique that still echoes through the temples and ruins today.
Must Do Experiences
-
Stand before the haunting Buddha head entwined within the roots of the sacred Bodhi tree at Wat Mahathat, one of Ayutthaya's most iconic and photogenic moments

Arrive early to catch the morning light illuminating the temple spires and spot local monks performing their daily routines before the main crowds arrive

Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
Visit between November and February when Thailand's cool, dry season makes outdoor exploration comfortable, and morning light casts dramatic shadows across the temple ruins perfect for photography. Avoid September to October when monsoon rains can make temple grounds slippery and reduce visibility, and skip April to May when temperatures soar above 35°C. Early morning departures around 7:00 am are ideal as you'll beat the largest crowds and enjoy the temples with softer, golden-hour light.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
The Buddha head entwined in tree roots at Wat Mahathat is most photogenic in early morning or late afternoon light when shadows accentuate the stone texture; arrive right after opening to capture it with fewer visitors
-
The Bang Pa-In Palace gardens offer stunning reflections in the ornamental ponds and lakes, so bring a polarising filter to enhance water clarity and sky depth
-
The river cruise provides excellent vantage points for capturing temple spires reflected in the water at golden hour; position yourself on the boat's left side for the best afternoon light
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
Always show respect when entering temples and palaces by removing your shoes if instructed, bowing slightly when greeting monks, and never pointing your feet toward Buddha statues or religious imagery. Dress modestly by covering shoulders and knees, and remember that the Thai Royal Family is deeply revered—speak respectfully about the palace and monarchy. A small tip (50-100 baht) for your guide is appreciated but not mandatory, and it's customary to accept offered food or drink with your right hand.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
The Loy Krathong Festival in November fills the Chao Phraya River with thousands of floating lights as locals celebrate with lanterns and prayers, creating a magical atmosphere if your tour coincides with these dates
-
Ayutthaya Historical Park hosts classical Thai dance performances and light shows during peak season (December to February), sometimes visible during evening returns to Bangkok
-
Wai Kru Day in March sees temples across Ayutthaya filled with local worshippers and merit-making ceremonies, offering insight into contemporary Thai spiritual practices alongside historical exploration
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes with good grip as temple ruins have uneven stone surfaces, loose bricks, and occasional holes that can cause twisted ankles
-
Bring and reapply high SPF sunscreen regularly, wear a hat, and stay hydrated as the tropical sun is intense and dehydration can lead to heat exhaustion in the afternoon heat
-
Be cautious of stray dogs in some temple areas—maintain distance and never attempt to pet them; if approached, stand still and avoid sudden movements
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
All entrance fees for the three temples and Bang Pa-In Royal Palace are included in the tour price, along with lunch and roundtrip hotel transfers, making this an excellent value compared to arranging transportation and entries independently. No additional child or senior discounts are typically offered as this is a small-group guided experience with fixed pricing.
Visit Duration
Plan for the full 8.5-hour experience from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm to properly explore the three temples, palace gardens, and river cruise without feeling rushed. If time is limited, prioritise the Buddha head at Wat Mahathat and Bang Pa-In Palace, as these offer the most iconic photo moments and cultural impact in the shortest time.
Accessibility
The Bang Pa-In Palace gardens have paved pathways and limited wheelchair access in main areas, though some palace buildings require stairs. Temple sites have uneven ground and numerous steps, making full wheelchair accessibility challenging, though some outer areas and ground-level sections can be navigated with assistance.

Overview
Step back in time with us on a full-day journey from Bangkok to Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Siam and one of Thailand’s most fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Sites. On this small-group Discova experience, our expert English-speaking guide brings the stories of kings, temples, and lost kingdoms to life as we explore the legendary ruins of this historic city.
Leaving the bustle of Bangkok behind, we travel north toward Ayutthaya, once one of the largest and most prosperous cities in the world and the capital of the Siamese Kingdom for more than four centuries. Our first stop is the elegant Bang Pa-In Royal Summer Palace. As we walk through its peaceful gardens, discover how Siamese kings once spent their summers here, welcoming foreign guests and members of the royal court among graceful pavilions and tranquil lakes.
One of the first temple visits is Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, one of Ayutthaya’s most impressive temple complexes. Its towering bell-shaped stupa was built to celebrate a legendary royal victory in an elephant battle, while rows of saffron-robed Buddha statues line the temple grounds. At the rear of the complex, a large reclining Buddha rests peacefully among the temple ruins, adding another memorable highlight to this remarkable site.
After enjoying a traditional Thai lunch, the journey continues into the heart of the ancient Ayutthaya Kingdom on the historic city island. Here we explore some of the most impressive ruins of the former capital. One of the highlights is the temple home to one of Thailand’s most famous sights: the mysterious Buddha head entwined within the roots of a sacred Bodhi tree (Wat Mahathat). Nearby, you will also see the royal temple marked by three iconic chedis that once held the ashes of ancient kings (Wat Phra Sri Sanphet), along with the impressive former royal palace grounds that once stood at the center of the kingdom’s power.
In the afternoon, board a traditional river boat and cruise along the Chao Phraya River around the island. From the water you’ll see Ayutthaya from a different perspective, passing historic monasteries and the magnificent riverside temple of Wat Chaiwatthanaram before returning to Bangkok in the late afternoon.
