About Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum

Step into living history at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, where aircraft that defended Ford Island on December 7, 1941, still hang in their original World War II hangars. From the shattered blue glass of Hangar 79 to the Japanese Zero and P-40 Warhawk on display, every exhibit tells a story of courage, sacrifice, and resilience.

Local Legends & Stories

Ford Island was the heart of naval aviation before December 7, 1941, and the morning of the attack saw civilian pilots like Arthur Larson mid-lesson when Japanese planes appeared overhead. The stories of those who flew from these very hangars — and those who never returned — are woven into every exhibit at the museum.

Must Do Experiences

  • Walk through Hangar 79 and touch the bullet-riddled original glass panes that have remained unrepaired since 1941

  • Explore Hangar 37 to see the Japanese A6M2 Zero, P-40 Warhawk, and the Stearman trainer mid-flying lesson when the attack began

  • Visit the restoration shop to watch craftsmen breathe new life into historic military aircraft

  • Listen to the multilingual audio guide for immersive stories behind each aircraft and hangar

Hidden Gems

  • Look closely at Hangar 79's glass — the unrepaired shrapnel holes are a haunting, tangible link to the morning of the attack

  • The restoration shop is often overlooked but offers a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into aircraft conservation work

  • Ford Island itself is a living military base, making this museum one of the few places where you can stand on the exact ground where history unfolded

What Makes it Special

  • The museum occupies original 1941 hangars on Ford Island — you are literally standing inside the buildings that were there during the attack

  • Hangar 79 retains its original blue glass panes, shattered by enemy fire and deliberately left unrepaired as a memorial

  • It is the only aviation museum in the world housed in the actual hangars from the Pearl Harbor attack, blending aviation history with one of the most pivotal moments of the 20th century

  • The restoration shop offers candid, dynamic shots of hands-on work — ask permission before photographing the artisans at work

This is a site of profound historical and emotional significance to many Americans — maintain a respectful demeanor throughout your visit Photography is permitted in most areas, but always be mindful of other visitors who may be reflecting on the gravity of the exhibits The museum honors both American and Japanese perspectives — approaching the history with sensitivity and an open mind enriches the experience for everyone

Overview

The museum stands on Ford Island, in the middle of the harbour, inside hangars that were there on the morning of 7 December 1941. Hangar 79 still has its original blue glass panes, shattered by strafing fire and left unrepaired — you can put your hand near the holes.

Inside Hangar 37, the story of the attack is told through the aircraft themselves: a Japanese A6M2 Zero, a P-40 Warhawk, and a Stearman trainer in which a civilian flying lesson was interrupted by the first wave. Hangar 79 holds the later decades — MiGs, an F-15, helicopters from Vietnam and the Gulf — plus a restoration shop where volunteers work in full view.

The restored Ford Island control tower, which directed traffic that morning, is open to climb. From the top you look out over the harbour, the Battleship Missouri and the Arizona Memorial, with the whole shape of the day laid out below you.
