The cool, dry season runs roughly November to February, and that is when most first-timers should go. I have been in the shoulder months and I do not regret it. May and October mean fewer people and slightly lower humidity in the evenings, but you are gambling on the sea. Getting there and getting around
Krabi International Airport sits in Nuea Khlong, around 25 kilometres from Ao Nang, and the drive normally takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. That is the single most useful number in this guide, because it decides how you plan your arrival day. I used to wing the airport taxi queue. Now I pre-book, because arriving tired, in the heat, with the wrong baht in my wallet is a miserable way to start a holiday.

The Phi Phi speedboat trip is the big name, around seven hours. Phi Phi is famous for a reason, but it is also crowded, and I will say this plainly: the crowds are the cost of admission. Go early, take your photos before the midday boats arrive, and wear the life jacket even if you swim well, because speedboats and open sea do not care how good a swimmer you are.

The James Bond Island tour goes up the coast to Phang Nga Bay, with limestone karsts, sea canoeing through caves and mangroves, and a floating village stop. A night at the Muay Thai ring
I put off going to a Muay Thai night for years because I assumed it would be a tourist trap, and I was wrong. Fights start around nine at night, which fills the evening slot that a lot of beach resorts leave empty. You watch the pre-fight ritual, the Wai Khru Ram Muay, in which fighters pay respect to their teachers before the bell, and then you sit very close to some seriously fast footwork, elbows and knees. It is loud, theatrical and a bit brutal, and if you have never seen it, it is worth one evening.
There are several venues, and the nights matter, so look at the schedule before you plan your week. In Ao Nang, the Landmark Stadium holds fights on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 21:00, and the ticket is a ringside experience. On Koh Lanta, Lanta Boxing Stadium, also known as New Coconut Stadium at Klong Dao Beach, runs on Tuesdays and Fridays, and the William Muay Thai Stadium runs on Thursdays and Saturdays. Plan for two to three hours in total, arrive a bit early for the best seats, and keep your valuables in the hotel safe because the venues have minimal security.
