Have 5 days in Iceland in October, is a 2WD rental enough for the Ring Road?

A 2WD is generally fine for the main Ring Road in October, but check road.is daily and get full insurance. If any F-roads are on your radar you absolutely need a 4x4, though most are closed by then anyway.
