Most travellers don't need a JR Pass anymore after the 2023 price hike. A 14-day pass is around 500 USD and you'll usually break even only if you take the Tokyo–Kyoto shinkansen round trip plus a few long-distance rides. Buy individual tickets or a regional pass instead and pocket the savings.
