Which phones support eSIM?
To use a travel eSIM, your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Most phones from the last few years do, but not every model or country version. The lists below are a general guide; always check your own phone.
Check your phone in one minute
- iPhone: Settings → General → About → look for EID, or Settings → Mobile (or Cellular) → look for Add eSIM.
- Android: Settings → About phone (Samsung: Status information) → look for EID, or the SIM settings (Network & internet → SIMs, or Connections → SIM manager) → look for an option to add or set up an eSIM.
- No EID and no option to add an eSIM: the phone does not support eSIM.
Apple iPhone
- iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR, and every iPhone since
- That includes the iPhone 11 to 17 series (mini, Plus, Pro and Pro Max), iPhone Air, the "e" models and iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation)
- Some recent models have no SIM tray and work with eSIM only, depending on the country they were bought in (for example the United States)
iPhones sold in mainland China mostly use two physical SIM cards, and only some recent models sold there support eSIM. Some models sold in Hong Kong and Macao also have two physical SIM slots. To check: Settings → General → About and look for an "EID", or look under Settings → Mobile (Cellular) for an "Add eSIM" option.
Google Pixel
- Pixel 4 and every newer Pixel, including the a-series, Pro, Pro XL and Fold models
- Pixel 3, 3 XL and 3a in most cases (see the note below)
- Some recent models sold in the United States work with eSIM only
Some Pixel 3 / 3 XL phones sold in Japan, Australia or Taiwan or by some carriers, and some Pixel 3a phones sold in Japan or by some carriers, do not support eSIM. Pixel 2 and older models generally do not. To check: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM, and look for an option to set up an eSIM.
Samsung Galaxy
- Galaxy S20 series and every newer S series, including Plus, Ultra and most FE models
- Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models
- Galaxy Note20 series
- Some recent Galaxy A models (this varies by model and by country)
Samsung says eSIM may not be supported depending on the country the phone was bought in, and on some phones sold through carriers. To check: Settings → Connections → SIM manager (sometimes "SIM card manager") and look for "Add eSIM"; the EID is under Settings → About phone → Status information.
Other brands
- Many recent flagship phones from other makers, such as Motorola, OPPO, Xiaomi, Sony, Huawei and Honor
eSIM support varies by model and by the country the phone was sold in. Check your phone as shown below.
Carrier lock
A phone locked to a carrier cannot use another network's eSIM, even if the model supports eSIM. If you bought your phone on a contract, ask your carrier whether it is unlocked before you buy a travel eSIM.
eSIM phone questions
How do I check if my phone supports eSIM?
Look for an EID (the eSIM identifier): on iPhone in Settings → General → About, on most Android phones under Settings → About phone (Samsung: About phone → Status information). If your phone shows an EID, or offers an option to add or set up an eSIM in its SIM / mobile settings, it supports eSIM.
What does carrier-unlocked mean?
A phone bought from a mobile carrier on a contract may be locked to that carrier and refuse other SIMs and eSIMs. Ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel. Phones bought outright from the maker or a shop are usually unlocked.
Can I keep my own SIM while I use a travel eSIM?
Yes, on a dual-SIM phone: keep your own SIM on for calls and texts, and choose the eSIM for mobile data.
Does every country version of a phone support eSIM?
No. The same model can differ by the country it was sold in and by the carrier that sold it, for example some iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao. Always check your own phone before you buy.
