About Saint Paul's Basilica: Audio Guide

Discover the grandeur of St. Paul Outside the Walls, Rome's second-largest basilica, with an immersive audio guide that brings centuries of history to life. From the breathtaking 5th-century mosaics to the serene Benedictine Abbey, this experience reveals the spiritual and artistic treasures that survived a devastating 1823 fire.

Local Legends & Stories

According to tradition, Saint Paul was beheaded near this very site around 67 AD, and his burial here made it one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Christendom. The fire that destroyed much of the original basilica in 1823 was allegedly started by a careless workman repairing the lead roofing — a tragic accident that nearly erased centuries of sacred art.

Must Do Experiences

  • Stand beneath the stunning 5th-century triumphal arch adorned with original golden mosaics

  • Explore the Gothic marble tabernacle by Arnolfo di Cambio shimmering above the high altar

  • Wander through the peaceful Benedictine Abbey cloisters for a moment of quiet reflection

  • Choose the comprehensive audio guide option to discover the entire archaeological area beyond the basilica

Hidden Gems

  • The original 6th-century columns framing the altar are among the few surviving elements from the ancient basilica commissioned by Constantine

  • The Benedictine Abbey houses a remarkable museum with early Christian artifacts and relics

  • Look closely at the cosmatesque floor patterns — these intricate medieval designs tell stories through symbolic geometry

  • One of Rome's four papal basilicas and the largest church dedicated to Saint Paul outside the Vatican walls

  • Remarkable survival of ancient treasures including the 5th-century arch and medieval tabernacle despite the 1823 fire

  • Two distinct audio guide options allow you to tailor your experience — basilica-focused or the full archaeological complex

Available Facilities

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

Visit early in the morning shortly after opening or late afternoon for a more contemplative atmosphere with fewer crowds. Weekdays outside of religious holidays offer the most peaceful experience, while summer mornings provide cooler temperatures before tour groups arrive.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • The golden mosaics on the triumphal arch are best photographed in the morning light when sunlight streams through the windows

  • Avoid using flash inside the basilica to preserve the ancient artworks and respect worshippers

  • The cloisters offer beautiful architectural framing opportunities, especially in the soft light of late afternoon

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

This is an active basilica where daily masses are held — maintain a respectful silence and dress appropriately with covered shoulders and knees. When mass is in progress, you may observe from the sides but avoid walking through the nave. It is customary to remove your hat upon entering.

Overview

St. Paul Outside the Walls is the largest church in Rome (after St Peter’s). The original burned down in the 19th century, but many of the original treasures survived: the 5th-century triumphal arch, the Gothic marble tabernacle shimmering over the high altar, and the nearby Benedictine Abbey. Grab one of two different audio guides - either focus on the basilica, or get access to the whole area.A lot of what stands on the site of this incredible basilica is a 19th-century reconstruction - the original was destroyed by fire in 1823. Pity the poor workman who was repairing the lead on the roof of the 4th century church and caused the damage. The good news is that the present church is a faithful reconstruction of the original. Enjoy your audio guide's explanation of the history of this remarkable church and see many of the surviving ancient treasures: the 5th-century mosaic-encrusted triumphal arch, the Gothic marble tabernacle, and the 12th century Romanesque Paschal candlestick with its weird animal-like creatures, literally designed to put the fear of God into worshipers. Speaking of fear, under the windows of the nave is a cycle of papal portraits: every pope since St Peter is represented. Legend has it that when there's no more room to add a pope, the world will end. Let's hope they're planning an extension!Speaking of extensions, if you want to see everything this spot has to offer, get the option that includes the Cloisters of the Benedictine Abbey, the Archaeological Area (including the tomb of St. Paul himself, the patron saint of, among others, authors, public workers and saddlemakers), and the Pinacoteca (painting gallery). There's so much to see and hear about at this significant church just a little off the beaten path. Get in and get informed!
