Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

The best time to start your kimono experience is early morning right after the shop opens, allowing you to beat the crowds at Nara Park and capture the best natural lighting for photos. Spring with its cherry blossoms and autumn with its vibrant foliage are the most picturesque seasons, though they also bring larger crowds.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • Capture the iconic torii gates of Kasuga Taisha during the golden hour just before sunset for a warm, ethereal glow.

  • Use a low angle when photographing with the Nara deer to create a more intimate and engaging perspective.

  • Respect the temple grounds by avoiding flash photography inside the wooden structures and keeping off restricted grassy areas.

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

When walking in a kimono, it is customary to take smaller, graceful steps and keep your posture straight to maintain the elegance of the garment. Remember to bow slightly when greeting locals or temple staff, and always remove your shoes before stepping onto tatami mats or entering shrine halls.

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • Experience the magical Nara Tokae Lantern Festival in August, where thousands of candles illuminate the parks and temples in the evening.

  • Witness the spectacular cherry blossom season in early April, providing a stunning pink backdrop for your kimono photos at Nara Park.

  • Enjoy the vibrant autumn foliage in November, which transforms the forests around Kasuga Taisha and Mount Wakakusa into a canvas of red and gold.

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Keep a safe distance from the deer and never feed them human food, as they can become aggressive if provoked or if they smell snacks.

  • Watch your step on the uneven stone paths and wooden steps around the shrines, as traditional zori sandals can make balancing tricky.

  • Stay hydrated and carry a small parasol or fan during the hot and humid summer months to prevent heat exhaustion while layered in a kimono.

Tangshoti Temple is located in Gojo-cho, Nara. It is a temple founded by the eminent monk Jianzhen of the Tang Dynasty. It still has a strong style of the Tang Dynasty. The golden hall and the lecture hall are all wooden buildings in the 8th century, which are extremely precious. Historical Background Monk Jianzhen accepted the invitation of Emperor Shengmu to come to Japan to promote Buddhism and reform Japanese Buddhism. However, after 5 times of distress at sea and blindness, it took him 12 years to finally arrive in Nara. In 759 AD, Tang Zhaoti Temple was established by Emperor Ling Jianzhen on the basis of the old house of the Seventh Prince of Emperor Tenmu. "Zhaoti" means a dojo for practice beside the Buddha, and Tang Zhaoti Temple means that this temple is an exclusive dojo built for monk Jianzhen who came from the Tang Dynasty to practice, for him to set up an altar to preach scriptures. After Jianzhen passed away, the temple was still under construction, and most of the courtyards were not completed until the Heian period. Therefore, the style of Tangshoti Temple combines the architectural features from the Tianhe period to the Heian period, and is a very valuable world cultural heritage. After paying respects to Master Jianzhen, Jianzhen was buried here. There is Jianzhen's tomb in the temple, and many devout Buddhists from China and Japan will come here to pay respects. In front of the tomb, there is a Qionghua tree transplanted from Yangzhou, the hometown of Master Jianzhen. In addition, the Yuying Hall, where the statue of the master is placed, preserves the precious woodcut statue of Jianzhen. The eyes are closed, the demeanor is dignified, and there is a firm and unswerving temperament between the eyebrows. Every year, it is only displayed on the day of Jianzhen's death (June 6).
