About Uji, More Than Tea Guided Walking Tour 4 Hrs

Immerse yourself in the rich heritage of Japan's most famous tea region with this intimate four-hour guided walking tour of Uji. Led by an Italian-speaking Travel Story Teller, this small-group experience goes beyond the cup to reveal the timeless art of tea-making, hidden temples, and serene riverside landscapes. Book this tour to savor authentic matcha tastings and uncover the deep cultural roots of Uji in a personalized, unforgettable setting.

Local Legends & Stories

Uji's tea legacy is deeply intertwined with the legendary monk Myoe, who is said to have planted the first tea seeds here in the 13th century after receiving them from the monk Eisai. Local lore whispers that the mist rolling off the Uji River blesses the tea leaves, giving Uji matcha its unparalleled umami flavor and vibrant emerald hue.

Must Do Experiences

  • Participate in an optional traditional tea ceremony to taste authentic, locally sourced Uji matcha.

  • Stroll through the historic streets and visit centuries-old tea shops to learn the meticulous art of tea cultivation.

  • Explore the serene surroundings of the Uji River and discover the architectural beauty of local shrines and temples.

  • Engage in intimate conversations with your Italian-speaking guide to gain deep cultural insights into Japan's tea heritage.

Hidden Gems

  • Seek out the subtle stone monuments and statues dedicated to the founders of Uji's tea culture, often overlooked by casual passersby.

  • Visit the lesser-known local tea roasters tucked away in side alleys where you can smell the fresh hojicha being roasted.

  • Discover the quiet, moss-covered pathways near Byodoin Temple's outer perimeter that offer peaceful, crowd-free moments of reflection.

What Makes it Special

  • The exclusive presence of an Italian-speaking Travel Story Teller ensures a highly personalized and culturally bridged narrative for Italian-speaking guests.

  • Small group sizes guarantee an intimate atmosphere, allowing for flexible pacing and direct interaction with local tea masters.

  • The tour focuses deeply on the historical and agricultural roots of Uji tea, offering a comprehensive understanding rather than just a superficial tasting.

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

The best time to embark on this tour is in the early morning during spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and the crowds are manageable. Early May is particularly magical, as it coincides with the first tea harvest season, offering the freshest tastings and a vibrant, lively atmosphere in the town.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • Capture the vibrant green hues of the tea fields and the historic wooden facades of the tea shops during the soft morning light for the best contrast.

  • When photographing inside traditional tea houses or during the optional tea ceremony, always ask for permission first and avoid using flash to preserve the tranquil ambiance.

  • Frame your shots of the Uji River with the overhanging willow trees and traditional bridges to create stunning, culturally rich landscape compositions.

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

When participating in the optional tea ceremony, remember to bow slightly when receiving your tea bowl and turn it twice clockwise before drinking to show respect to the host. Tipping is not customary in Japan, so a simple, heartfelt arigatou gozaimasu is the best way to show appreciation to your guide and local vendors.

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • The Uji Tea Festival in early October celebrates the harvest with traditional tea-roasting demonstrations and vibrant parades.

  • The Shincha new tea season in May offers exclusive tastings of the year's first and most prized tea leaves.

  • During the winter illumination events, the bridges and riverside paths are beautifully lit, offering a magical evening atmosphere if your tour extends into the late afternoon.

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun during warmer months, as the walking tour covers a significant distance with limited shaded areas along the riverbank.

  • Be mindful of narrow streets and watch out for bicycles, which are a common mode of local transport in Uji's historic districts.

  • Keep your personal belongings secure in a cross-body bag or front pocket while navigating the busy tourist areas and small tea shops.

Byodoin Temple is a temple garden in the style of pond spring boat tour in the Heian period. Its site is in front of the Uji River and is far from Mount Asahi. During the Zhenguan reign (859-877), Yuan Rong (822-895), the minister of the left, built a garden and built a villa accordingly. In the 4th year of Changde (998), the Regent and Minister of State, Fujiwara Michi, rebuilt the garden here. The cherry blossoms, azaleas and lotuses in the garden are fragrant and blooming every year. Byodoin Temple was listed by UNESCO as a World cultural heritage. When the temple was first built, many buildings were built in the spacious temple. Most of it was later destroyed by fire. Now only the Phoenix Hall, Guanyin Hall and Bell Tower are preserved. Among them, the more famous one is the "Phoenix Hall". The reason why it is called "Phoenix Hall" is because there is a phoenix statue on the roof. The building stretches in the direction of the two wings, and it looks like the phoenix is about to spread its wings.
