About Kamakura & Enoshima 1-Day Bus Tour Day Tours
Escape the bustling streets of Tokyo and immerse yourself in the historic charm and coastal beauty of Kamakura and Enoshima on this comprehensive one-day bus tour. Enjoy a stress-free journey with an English and Chinese-speaking guide as you visit iconic landmarks like the Great Buddha and Hase-dera Temple, perfectly blending ancient culture with stunning seaside scenery.
Local Legends & Stories
Legend says that the Great Buddha of Kamakura was originally housed in a massive wooden temple, but after a devastating tsunami washed the building away in the 15th century, the serene bronze statue remained perfectly intact, sitting peacefully in the open air ever since.
Must Do Experiences
-
Stand in awe before the Kōtoku-in Great Buddha, one of Japan's most iconic and monumental bronze statues.
-
Wander through the lush, terraced gardens and serene caves of Hase-dera Temple while enjoying panoramic views of the ocean.
-
Stroll across the scenic Enoshima coastline and soak in the relaxing seaside atmosphere that has inspired artists for centuries.
-
Listen to fascinating historical commentary from your bilingual guide as you travel comfortably between these historic sites.
Hidden Gems
-
Look closely at the Jizo statues lining the paths near Hase-dera, often adorned with hand-knitted red hats and bibs left by locals praying for the protection of children.
-
While at the Great Buddha, take a moment to view the massive wooden sandals displayed on the grounds, which were crafted by local children to encourage the Buddha to walk and bring peace.
-
Keep an eye out for the wild deer or local cats that frequently roam the quieter, shaded pathways around Enoshima's coastal trails.
What Makes it Special
-
Seamless, air-conditioned bus transportation eliminates the hassle of navigating complex local train transfers between Tokyo, Kamakura, and Enoshima.
-
Dual-language commentary ensures that both English and Chinese-speaking travellers gain deep cultural insights without needing separate tour groups.
-
Pre-paid entrance fees to major highlights like Hase-dera and Kōtoku-in mean you can skip the ticketing queues and maximize your exploration time.
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather and stunning scenery, with cherry blossoms in April and vibrant foliage in November enhancing the temple grounds. Summer brings a lively coastal vibe to Enoshima but can be quite hot and humid, so early morning departures are ideal to beat the midday sun and the largest crowds.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Capture the Great Buddha from the lower angles near the lotus pond to emphasize its towering scale against the open sky.
-
The terraced gardens of Hase-dera offer spectacular elevated vantage points for photographing the sparkling Sagami Bay, especially during the golden hour lighting of the late afternoon.
-
Remember to turn off your flash and refrain from taking photos inside the main worship halls of the temples to respect the sacred environment and fellow visitors.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
When visiting Kōtoku-in and Hase-dera, it is customary to bow slightly before entering the main temple gates and to speak in hushed tones to maintain the tranquil atmosphere. If you wish to make an offering, gently toss a coin into the designated offering boxes rather than handing money directly to the temple staff.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
Visit in mid-June to witness the spectacular hydrangea festival, where thousands of vibrant blue and purple blooms line the steep slopes of Hase-dera Temple.
-
The Kamakura Matsuri in April features lively parades, traditional music, and yabusame demonstrations celebrating the city's rich samurai heritage.
-
During the winter months, the Great Buddha and surrounding temples are often beautifully illuminated in the evenings, creating a magical and serene atmosphere.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Stay hydrated and apply sunscreen, especially during the summer months, as the coastal areas of Enoshima and open temple courtyards offer limited shade.
-
Watch your step on the stone pathways and wooden stairs around Hase-dera, as they can become quite slippery after rain.
-
Keep a close eye on your personal belongings in crowded tourist spots and on the bus, and always follow the guide's instructions regarding designated crossing areas near busy coastal roads.
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
Your tour package conveniently includes all necessary entrance fees for Kōtoku-in and Hase-dera Temple, meaning you won't need to carry extra cash for these main attractions. Child and senior discounts may be available at the time of booking, so be sure to select the correct traveller category when reserving your seats.
Visit Duration
This comprehensive day tour spans approximately eight to ten hours from Tokyo departure to return, giving you a few hours of dedicated free time at each major stop. If you find yourself short on time at any location, prioritize seeing the Great Buddha and the main hall of Hase-dera before exploring the secondary gardens.
Accessibility
While the air-conditioned bus and main courtyard of the Great Buddha are wheelchair accessible, the terraced gardens and steep cave pathways at Hase-dera involve significant stairs and uneven terrain that may be challenging for those with mobility issues.
