About Tokyo Asakusa Rickshaw Private Chartered Tour by Ebisuya
Step back in time and explore Tokyo's historic Asakusa district aboard a traditional rickshaw with Ebisuya's private chartered tour. Led by knowledgeable local pullers, this immersive experience offers a unique, eco-friendly way to discover hidden alleys and iconic Edo-period landmarks while enjoying personalized commentary.
Local Legends & Stories
Asakusa is steeped in Edo-period lore, including the legend of the two fishermen brothers who found a golden statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, in the Sumida River, leading to the founding of Senso-ji Temple. Your rickshaw guide will bring these ancient tales to life as you traverse the very streets where samurai and merchants once walked.
Must Do Experiences
-
Cruise past the iconic Kaminarimon Gate and Senso-ji Temple while your guide shares fascinating historical anecdotes.
-
Navigate the narrow, charming backstreets of Asakusa that are inaccessible to cars and large tour buses.
-
Capture stunning, personalized photographs taken by your skilled rickshaw puller at scenic viewpoints.
-
Enjoy a smooth, eco-friendly ride along the Sumida River with views of the Tokyo Skytree.
Hidden Gems
-
Ask your puller to take you to the quiet, lesser-known Chingodo Inari Shrine, famous for its statues of raccoon dogs.
-
Discover the traditional craft shops and hidden local eateries tucked away in the residential alleys just behind the bustling Nakamise Shopping Street.
-
Look out for the beautiful, historic machiya wooden townhouses that still stand in the quieter corners of the Asakusa district.
What Makes it Special
-
Your rickshaw puller acts as a private guide, translator, and even a professional photographer to capture your best travel memories.
-
The custom-built, weather-proof rickshaws feature comfortable seating and adjustable canopies to ensure a pleasant ride in any season.
-
Experience the perfect blend of traditional Edo-period charm and modern Japanese hospitality tailored entirely to your pace and interests.
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
Early morning or late afternoon offers the best lighting for photography and helps you avoid the peak midday crowds around Senso-ji Temple. Spring and autumn provide breathtaking backdrops with cherry blossoms and colorful foliage, though booking well in advance is essential during these peak tourist months.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Let your rickshaw puller take your photos, as they know the exact angles and hidden spots that frame the Tokyo Skytree and Senso-ji perfectly.
-
Golden hour, just after sunrise or before sunset, provides a warm, magical glow over the traditional architecture and the Sumida River.
-
Keep your camera ready for candid shots of the vibrant street life and traditional storefronts as you glide through the narrow alleys.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
While tipping is not customary in Japan, expressing your gratitude with a sincere arigato gozaimasu and a slight bow to your rickshaw puller at the end of the tour is highly appreciated. Please remain seated while the rickshaw is in motion and avoid leaning out excessively to respect the puller's balance and local traffic etiquette.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
Experience the magical illuminations and festive atmosphere of the Asakusa Toshi-no-Ichi Year-End Fair and Hagoita-Ichi Battledore Fair in December.
-
Enjoy the spectacular views of the Sumida River Fireworks Festival in late July, though expect heavy crowds and potential route adjustments.
-
Ride under the beautiful cherry blossoms lining the Sumida Park during the annual Sakura Matsuri in late March to early April.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Keep your hands, arms, and personal belongings inside the rickshaw at all times to avoid accidents with passing pedestrians or bicycles.
-
Hold onto the safety handles provided on the sides of the carriage, especially when navigating slight inclines or uneven cobblestone paths.
-
Apply sunscreen and wear a hat during the summer months, as the open-air design leaves you exposed to direct sunlight.
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
The tour is priced per rickshaw rather than per person, making it an excellent value for couples or small families sharing the carriage. Children under a certain age can often ride for free or at a discounted rate when sharing a seat with an adult, but check the specific booking options for exact pricing tiers.
Visit Duration
Depending on the chartered route selected, the rickshaw ride typically lasts between thirty minutes to two hours. If short on time, prioritize the thirty-minute classic route which covers the essential highlights of Senso-ji Temple and the Nakamise Shopping Street.
Accessibility
The Ebisuya rickshaws are designed to accommodate foldable wheelchairs and strollers, but guests must be able to transfer into the rickshaw seat with minimal assistance. Please inform the staff at the time of booking or upon arrival so they can prepare the appropriate carriage and ramp.
