About Tokyo Tsukiji Outer Fish Market Tour and Sushi Cooking Lesson Day Tours

You will taste your way through vibrant market stalls before stepping into a local studio to master the art of crafting authentic Japanese sushi under expert guidance. It is the perfect blend of cultural exploration and interactive gastronomy for any food lover visiting Japan.
Local Legends & Stories
Tsukiji has been the spiritual and culinary epicenter of Tokyo's seafood trade for centuries, originally established by fishermen who reclaimed the land after the Great Fire of Meireki. The nearby Hongan-ji Temple was relocated here to serve and protect the market workers, becoming a sanctuary where vendors historically prayed for bountiful catches and safe trades.

Roll, shape, and slice your own authentic nigiri and maki sushi during a hands-on masterclass with a local sushi chef.
-
Admire the unique Indo-Saracenic architecture of the Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple right at your starting point.
-
Engage with passionate local vendors and learn the secrets behind selecting the freshest ingredients for your sushi.
Hidden Gems
-

-
Ask your guide to point out the specialized knife shops hidden in the market alleys, where you can get your name engraved on a professional sushi knife.

Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
Morning tours are highly recommended to experience the market at its most energetic and to secure the freshest catches of the day. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for walking through the open-air market alleys, while summer mornings can be quite humid and crowded.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Capture the vibrant colors of the fresh seafood and street food stalls in the early morning light, but always ask vendors for permission before taking close-up photos of their goods.
-
The ornate stone carvings and unique architectural details of the Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple exterior are best photographed from a slight low angle to emphasize the grand design.
-
Focus on action shots during your sushi masterclass, capturing the precise moments of rice molding and fish slicing in the well-lit cooking studio.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
When walking through the Tsukiji Outer Market, remember that it is a working wholesale and retail environment, so avoid blocking narrow pathways and do not eat while walking. During the sushi lesson, it is customary to listen closely to the chef's instructions and show appreciation for the ingredients, reflecting the deep Japanese respect for food and culinary mastery. Tipping is not practiced in Japan, so a sincere thank you or arigato gozaimasu is the best way to show your gratitude to your guide and chef.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
Visit during the winter months to taste seasonal specialties like fatty tuna and fresh snow crabs that are highly prized in Japanese winter cuisine.
-
Experience the vibrant atmosphere leading up to the Japanese New Year, when the market is bustling with locals buying premium ingredients for their traditional holiday feasts.
-
Look out for special springtime street food variations featuring fresh bamboo shoots and cherry blossom-themed sweets sold by market vendors.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Watch your step and stay alert for small motorized carts and bicycles navigating the narrow, sometimes wet and slippery, market aisles.
-
Be cautious when handling the extremely sharp sushi knives provided during the cooking lesson and always follow the chef's safety demonstrations.
-
Ensure you are aware of your personal seafood allergy limits and communicate them clearly to your guide before consuming any market samples.
