About Auckland Museum Tickets
Discover the rich tapestry of New Zealand's heritage at Auckland Museum, where stunning Maori and Pacific Islander collections meet fascinating natural history and European exhibits. Explore at your own pace through world-class displays that have earned it a spot among Auckland's top attractions.
Local Legends & Stories
The museum houses sacred Maori taonga (treasures) that are believed to hold the spiritual essence of ancestors, making it a place of deep cultural significance for local iwi (tribes). Many exhibits tell stories of legendary Polynesian navigators who discovered New Zealand's islands through incredible ocean voyages.
Must Do Experiences
-
Marvel at the awe-inspiring Maori meeting house and carved wooden artefacts in the Te Whare Taonga o Tane gallery. Immerse yourself in the dynamic Pacific Islander exhibits showcasing traditional voyaging canoes and cultural treasures. Discover New Zealand's unique natural history through interactive displays and stunning taxidermy collections. Explore the fascinating European history sections featuring colonial-era artefacts and personal stories.
Hidden Gems
-
Visit the museum's quiet courtyard garden, a peaceful oasis often missed by hurried visitors. Peek into the conservation labs where you can sometimes see curators carefully restoring precious artefacts. Look for the subtle Maori carvings hidden throughout the building that tell stories of ancestral legends.
What Makes it Special
-
As one of Auckland's Top 10 Things to Do, it offers a comprehensive showcase of Maori and Pacific Islander culture in one of the world's best collections. The museum expertly balances historical craftsmanship with engaging natural history exhibits, creating a truly immersive experience. Its thoughtfully curated European history sections provide a fascinating counterpoint to the indigenous narratives.
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
Weekday mornings tend to be less crowded, allowing for a more contemplative experience among the artefacts. The museum is particularly atmospheric during Auckland's cooler months when the interior galleries provide a cozy retreat. Consider visiting during school holidays if traveling with children, as special activities are often scheduled.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Flash photography is generally not permitted in the heritage and cultural galleries to protect sensitive artefacts. The natural light in the central atrium creates beautiful photo opportunities, especially during afternoon hours. Look for the stunning architectural details of the museum building itself, which complement the exhibits inside.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
When viewing Maori and Pacific artefacts, remember that many items hold deep spiritual significance and are considered taonga (treasures) by their communities. It's respectful to maintain a quiet, contemplative demeanor in the cultural exhibition areas. Some restricted areas may have specific protocols, so always follow signage and staff instructions.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
Annual Maori cultural performances and storytelling sessions during summer months. Special Pacific Island heritage celebrations featuring traditional dance and craft demonstrations. Seasonal family workshops and guided tours during school holidays.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Stay on designated pathways and avoid leaning against display cases to protect both yourself and the priceless artefacts. Keep personal belongings secure in the busy museum environment, especially during peak visiting hours. Follow all posted instructions regarding interactive exhibits, particularly those designed for children.
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
General admission tickets provide access to all permanent exhibitions and are reasonably priced for the quality of experience offered. Concession and family ticket options are available, with children typically entering free.
Visit Duration
Most visitors spend 2-3 hours exploring the main galleries at a comfortable pace. Those with deep interest in Maori or Pacific culture may wish to allocate 4+ hours to fully appreciate the extensive collections.
Accessibility
The museum is fully wheelchair accessible with lifts to all exhibition levels and accessible restrooms throughout. Audio guides and large-print materials are available upon request at the information desk.
