About Milford Sound Cruise with Underwater Observatory - Morning Departure

Descend 10 metres below the surface in the underwater observatory to discover rare black coral and vibrant sea creatures, then glide past thundering waterfalls and keep your eyes peeled for seals, dolphins, and the elusive Fiordland Crested Penguin.
Local Legends & Stories
In Māori tradition, Milford Sound is known as Te Fjordland and is steeped in the legend of Kupe, the great Polynesian navigator who discovered New Zealand. The towering cliffs and deep waters are said to be the resting place of ancestral spirits, making every cruise a journey through living history.

Hidden Gems

Ask your nature guide about the Māori legend of Ngā Manuhiri o Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, the visitors of the great sea of Kiwa, which gives Milford Sound its spiritual significance

Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The summer early morning tour is the ideal choice, offering calmer waters, better wildlife activity, and softer light perfect for photography. Visit between December and February for the warmest weather and highest chances of spotting dolphins and penguins, though the fiord is stunning year-round.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Bring a waterproof camera or phone case to capture the misty splashes as you pass beneath towering waterfalls
-
Use a polarising filter to cut through the glare on the water and bring out the rich greens and blues of the fiord
-
The underwater observatory is dimly lit, so switch to a higher ISO setting to get sharp shots of the marine life below
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
Respect the cultural significance of Milford Sound to the local Māori iwi by listening attentively to your guide's stories and legends. Remove your shoes if you visit any nearby marae or sacred sites, and always follow the guidelines set by the Department of Conservation when exploring the area.
