About TSS Earnslaw Cruise
Step aboard the TSS Earnslaw, Queenstown's iconic vintage steamship, and glide across the stunning waters of Lake Wakatipu on a 90-minute cruise through alpine scenery. Dubbed the Lady of the Lake, this historic vessel offers a nostalgic journey complete with deck exploration, an engine room tour, and onboard refreshments.
Local Legends & Stories
The TSS Earnslaw was named after Walter Earnslaw, a partner in the original Otago and Southland Steam Navigation Company. Locals affectionately call her the Lady of the Lake, and she has become an enduring symbol of Queenstown's pioneering heritage and romantic connection to Lake Wakatipu.
Must Do Experiences
-
Explore the working engine room and witness the magnificent steam machinery in action, wander the expansive decks for panoramic views of surrounding mountains and lake, visit the onboard gallery featuring historical photographs of the ship's heritage, and enjoy a drink or bite to eat at the licensed cafe and bar.
Hidden Gems
-
Climb up to the bridge for a closer look at the ship's navigation controls and enjoy a quieter perspective of the lake, linger on the upper deck during the cruise for the best photo opportunities of Remarkables Mountain range, and ask the friendly crew about the ship's remarkable history — she has been sailing since 1912.
What Makes it Special
-
The TSS Earnslaw is a rare surviving coal-fired steamship that has been carrying passengers across Lake Wakatipu since 1912, making it one of the oldest operating passenger steamers in the world, The cruise offers an authentic vintage experience unlike any modern boat tour with its original steam engines, wooden interiors, and period charm, Every detail aboard is preserved with care, from the polished brass fittings to the working galley, creating an immersive step back in time.
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The best time to experience the TSS Earnslaw is during the New Zealand summer months from December to February when the weather is warmest and the lake views are at their most spectacular. Autumn from March to May offers stunning golden foliage backdrops and fewer crowds, making it a wonderful alternative.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Position yourself on the starboard side of the upper deck for the most iconic views of the Remarkables mountain range reflecting on the lake, capture the steam billowing from the ship's funnel against the alpine backdrop for a truly atmospheric shot, and visit the gallery inside for unique black-and-white historical photos of the Earnslaw through the decades.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
New Zealanders value a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, so feel free to strike up conversations with fellow passengers and the crew during the cruise. Tipping is not expected or required on the cruise, and it is considered polite to queue orderly when boarding and when using facilities on board.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
Seasonal themed cruises are offered throughout the year including summer dinner cruises and festive Christmas-themed sailings, the ship occasionally hosts private charters and special events such as wedding cruises and corporate functions, and during winter months select departures feature heated indoor seating for added comfort.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Follow all safety instructions provided by the crew and remain behind designated railings while on the outdoor decks, keep an eye on children at all times as the decks have open edges along the lake, and store any loose items securely as the ship can sway gently on the water.
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
Ticket prices for the TSS Earnslaw cruise vary depending on the season and type of cruise selected, with adult fares typically ranging around 80 to 110 New Zealand dollars and discounted rates available for children and families. Booking online in advance is often cheaper than purchasing at the wharf and helps guarantee your spot.
Visit Duration
The standard TSS Earnslaw cruise lasts approximately 90 minutes, giving you plenty of time to explore the decks, engine room, and gallery at your own pace. Plan for a half-day experience if you wish to combine the cruise with a visit to the nearby Walter Peak High Country Farm.
Accessibility
The TSS Earnslaw offers limited accessibility as the historic vessel has steep stairs and narrow passageways in some areas. However, the main deck and cafe area are partially accessible, and crew members are happy to assist passengers with mobility considerations — it is recommended to contact the operator in advance to discuss specific needs.
