What to expect

Take a stately jaunt through the history of Austria by visiting The Imperial Carriage Museum, an assortment of more than 60 historical state coaches, sledges, and sedan chairs, as well as more than two hundred years' worth of harnesses and livery. Located in the former Winter Riding School, the collection features the richly decorated Imperial Coach used at royal weddings and coronations. Another highlight is the Sisi Trail that showcases the sumptuous carriages of the beloved Elisabeth of Austria, as well as personal mementos such as her dresses and her only extant saddle. See the luxurious travelling coaches and the charming children’s carriages of Habsburg princes and princesses. Less upbeat, but equally fascinating, is the black funerary coach, used to transport deceased Habsburgs to their final resting place. Witness some of the first automobiles used by Emperor Karl I that went up to 90 km/h – including a revolutionary petrol engine and five gears. “Imperial Speed” showcases three remarkable vehicles from three different centuries used by the Habsburgs – an extremely elegant ornamented “biroccio”, a two-wheeler with a gold-plated chassis and artistic decoration from 1814, another vehicle constructed in 1914 – the only surviving court automobile – and the ArtCar that catapulted this illustrious series into the 21st century.
