About Lake Tōya
Embark on a scenic journey across the stunning caldera of Lake Tōya with this comprehensive sightseeing boat tour to Nakajima Island. Enjoy seamless round-trip transportation, an expert tour guide, and breathtaking views of Hokkaido's pristine volcanic landscapes. It is the perfect hassle-free excursion for nature lovers wanting to experience the serene beauty of Toyako Onsen.
Local Legends & Stories
The Ainu people, the indigenous inhabitants of Hokkaido, historically revered Lake Tōya as a sacred body of water, naming it Toya which means lake with a shore. Local folklore suggests that the spirits of the surrounding volcanoes, including the nearby Mount Usu, watch over the lake's tranquil waters to protect the local communities.
Must Do Experiences
-
Cruise across the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tōya aboard the comfortable Nakajima sightseeing boat.
-
Explore the lush, untouched forests and diverse wildlife of Nakajima Island with your expert guide.
-
Take in the panoramic views of Mount Yotei, often referred to as the Mount Fuji of Hokkaido, from the lake's vantage points.
-
Relax and soak in the serene atmosphere of the Toyako Onsen area before or after your boat excursion.
Hidden Gems
-
Look out for the elusive Ezo red fox and various migratory birds that call the dense forests of Nakajima Island home.
-
Discover the island's unique volcanic soil, which supports rare alpine flora not commonly found elsewhere in the region.
-
Ask your guide about the submerged volcanic vents beneath the lake that keep the waters remarkably warm and unfrozen even in winter.
What Makes it Special
-
The tour includes a fully guided experience with seamless bus transportation, eliminating the stress of navigating rural Hokkaido.
-
Nakajima Island is uninhabited and strictly protected, offering a rare glimpse into an undisturbed natural ecosystem.
-
You get to experience the lake in all its glory across different seasons, from vibrant summer greens to stunning winter snowscapes.
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The best time to visit is during the early morning or late afternoon when the lighting beautifully illuminates Mount Yotei and the lake's surface. Autumn in October offers spectacular fall foliage on Nakajima Island, while the summer months provide the most comfortable weather for walking the island trails. Winter visits are magical with snow-covered landscapes, but be sure to check the adjusted seasonal operating hours.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Capture the reflection of Mount Yotei on the lake's surface during the early morning hours when the water is calmest and the light is soft.
-
Use a polarizing filter on your camera lens to reduce glare from the water and enhance the vibrant colors of the island's forest canopy.
-
Head to the upper deck of the sightseeing boat for unobstructed, wide-angle panoramic shots of the entire caldera landscape.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
When exploring Nakajima Island, strictly adhere to the leave no trace principle by not picking plants, feeding wildlife, or straying from marked trails. It is customary in Japan to be punctual, so please respect the group's schedule and return to the boat at the designated time. Tipping your tour guide is not expected or practiced in Japanese culture, so a polite bow and a simple thank you is the best way to show appreciation.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
The Lake Tōya Fireworks Festival runs nightly from late April to October, featuring spectacular moving fireworks launched from boats on the lake.
-
Autumn foliage season in mid-to-late October transforms Nakajima Island into a vibrant canvas of red, orange, and yellow leaves.
-
During the winter months, the nearby Toyako Onsen area hosts illuminations and snow festivals that perfectly complement a daytime lake cruise.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Stay behind the designated safety railings on the boat deck, especially when the vessel is in motion or during windy conditions.
-
Be cautious of uneven terrain and exposed tree roots on Nakajima Island's forest trails, particularly after rainfall when the paths can be slippery.
-
Keep a safe distance from any wildlife you encounter on the island, as approaching or feeding wild animals can be dangerous and is strictly prohibited.
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
This comprehensive package includes the sightseeing boat ticket, bus transportation, and guide services, offering excellent value compared to booking separately. Child and senior discounts may be available depending on the specific booking tier, so be sure to select the appropriate passenger category during checkout.
Visit Duration

Accessibility
The main deck of the sightseeing boat and the pier facilities are generally wheelchair accessible, allowing guests with mobility aids to enjoy the cruise. However, the natural forest trails on Nakajima Island feature uneven terrain and steps, making them unsuitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
