Local Legends & Stories

Elephant Family Phuket represents the Karen people's deep cultural heritage of living in harmony with elephants, a tradition spanning centuries in Thailand's northern regions. The sanctuary was founded to preserve and share this unique cultural bond with visitors, ensuring both the elephants and Karen traditions are honored and protected.

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

Early morning sessions (9am-12pm) are ideal for avoiding afternoon heat and experiencing elephants at their most active and playful. Visit during Thailand's cool season from November to February for the most comfortable weather, though the sanctuary operates year-round. Mid-week visits tend to have smaller groups, creating a more intimate experience with the elephants.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • Capture the best moments during the mud spa and river shower when natural water droplets catch the light and elephant behaviours are most expressive

  • The soft morning light between 9-10am provides ideal conditions for sharp, well-lit photographs without harsh shadows

  • Respect the guides' photography guidelines and avoid using flash near the elephants' faces, as it can startle them

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

Show respect to the Karen guides by listening attentively to their stories and following their instructions—they are the elephant experts and cultural custodians. Dress modestly when entering the sanctuary, and remember that tipping, while not required, is deeply appreciated as these guides are passionate about their work and the elephant welfare mission.

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • Peak season from November to February attracts families during school holidays, offering a vibrant atmosphere but requiring earlier booking

  • The sanctuary occasionally hosts special Karen cultural celebration days where traditional music and storytelling accompany the elephant experiences, creating deeper cultural immersion

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Always maintain the distance and positioning your guide recommends, as elephants are powerful animals and need clear boundaries even in safe, managed environments

  • Apply waterproof sunscreen and stay hydrated throughout your visit, as the tropical sun and physical activity can lead to dehydration quickly

  • Inform your guide of any mobility issues, health conditions, or allergies before activities begin so they can adapt the experience safely

Visitor Information

Entry Fee

Pricing varies by program length and activities included; morning and afternoon sessions are offered at different rates. Round-trip transfers from most Phuket hotels, fruit, refreshments, and insurance are included in the package, providing excellent value with no hidden costs.

Visit Duration

Plan for 3-4 hours total, including travel time from your hotel, to fully experience both the morning (9am-12pm) or afternoon (2:30pm-5:30pm) program. If short on time, prioritize the feeding and mud spa activities, as these offer the most interactive elephant engagement and memorable photo opportunities.

Accessibility

The sanctuary has uneven terrain and natural pathways typical of an eco-tourism site, which may present challenges for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. Contact the sanctuary directly before booking if you have specific accessibility needs, as staff may be able to arrange adapted experiences.

Overview

Elephant experiences for the whole family
Welcome at Elephant Family Phuket
Elephant Family Phuket invites you to join them with feeding, interacting and learning about these gentle giants.

We build this elephant park in November 2018, with the mission, to bring our culture, the culture from the Karen people, and how we live together with elephants, closer to the tourism here on Phuket Island.

15 years ago we started this project, with the “Kerchor Eco Elephant Park” in Mae Wang, Chiang Mai.
We are proud to present the elephant lives, and how Karen people’s lives in our Elephant Family Park, in Phuket. We want to raise the lives of elephants and their owners families (Karen families) to be better.

Actually we are having 5 elephants, Tubtim and her 3 elephant babies 3. Namchok, Yokfah and Hansa. Fah Mai is our latest orphan elephant.
