Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The best time to take this tour is on weekday mornings right when the museum opens, allowing you to experience the galleries before the peak afternoon crowds arrive. Friday and Saturday evenings are also magical, as the museum stays open late and takes on a more intimate, romantic atmosphere.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Flash photography and selfie sticks are strictly prohibited inside the galleries to protect the artwork.
-
Utilize the abundant natural light in the American Wing courtyard and the Temple of Dendur for stunning, well-lit shots.
-
Capture the grand Beaux-Arts architecture of the Great Hall as soon as you enter for a classic Met photograph.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
Maintain a respectful, quiet demeanor while in the galleries, as many visitors come for quiet contemplation of the art. Do not touch any of the artwork, sculptures, or display cases, as the oils from human skin can cause irreversible damage to priceless artifacts.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
The Met Gala, held on the first Monday in May, is a world-famous fashion event that introduces the Costume Institute's annual spring exhibition.
-
The museum hosts the Summer Roof Garden Commission, featuring site-specific contemporary art installations with stunning skyline views.
-
During the winter holidays, don't miss the spectacular Christmas Tree and Neapolitan Baroque Crèche displayed in the Medieval Sculpture Hall.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-

-
Stay with your guide and tour group, as it is incredibly easy to get lost in the museum's maze-like layout.
-
Familiarize yourself with the nearest exits and listen to museum staff in the rare event of an emergency.

This experience starts promptly, and you won't be able to enter the museum if you miss your tour. We suggest arriving 30 minutes early as there will be a line for the security check before you can meet your guide inside the Met.
We aim to show you the very best art at the Met. However, what's on display can vary, so if an art piece we typically show isn't available, your guide will substitute it with something else.
The Cantor Roof Garden is typically open from mid-April through October. In winter and early spring, our tour won't include this stop.
