Overview
Tom Devlin makes monsters for a living, and this is his own collection — masks, animatronics, latex creature suits, props and production artwork gathered across decades of working in horror film effects, along with pieces built in his own workshop.
The rooms are staged as sets rather than display cases, so you walk through a laboratory, a graveyard, a cabin, each dimly lit and populated by things that were used on screen. Some of it is genuinely unsettling; most of it is the sort of craft you rarely get to examine at arm's length.
Photographs are encouraged, and the museum's small scale works in its favour — around an hour, in Boulder City, a few minutes from the Hoover Dam. For anyone who grew up on monster films, it is a strange and satisfying detour from the desert highway.
