Penfolds was founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Penfold and his wife Mary, who planted the first vineyard on the banks of the Torrens River in Adelaide. The legendary Grange Shiraz, created by winemaker Max Schubert in 1951, was initially rejected by Penfolds' management but went on to become Australia's most celebrated wine, proving Schubert's vision was ahead of its time.
