About Sydney Zoo

Sydney Zoo redefines the zoo experience with its open, immersive habitats spread across 40 hectares of Western Sydney parkland. With no cages or moats — just expansive glass and naturalistic enclosures — visitors walk among lions, giraffes, elephants, and sharks in settings that feel like the wild itself. It is a must-visit destination for families, animal lovers, and anyone seeking a closer connection with wildlife.

Local Legends & Stories

Sydney Zoo was conceived as a bold reimagining of the modern zoo, born from the vision that visitors should never feel separated from the animals they come to see. Its location in Western Sydney has made it a point of regional pride, transforming a once-underappreciated corridor into a world-class wildlife destination.

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

Visit during the Australian spring and summer months (September to February) for the best weather and most active animal behaviour. Weekday mornings are the quietest, while weekends and school holidays draw larger crowds. The late afternoon into early evening is ideal for spotting nocturnal species as they emerge.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • The African Savannah at sunrise offers golden light and the most relaxed animal behaviour — perfect for wide shots of giraffes and zebras

  • The glass walls in the reptile and aquarium areas provide stunning close-up opportunities; use a polarising filter to reduce reflections

  • The gibbon canopy enclosures are best photographed in the morning when the primates are most active and the light filters through the trees

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

Australia is a casual and laid-back culture, so smart-casual attire is perfectly acceptable throughout the zoo. Tipping is not expected or customary. Always respect the no-flash photography rule in reptile and nocturnal areas, as flash can distress sensitive species.

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • Keeper Campouts — overnight stays in selected habitats for an exclusive after-hours wildlife experience

  • Sydney Zoo's Annual Wildlife Festival — a summer event featuring extended hours, special talks, and family activities

  • Nocturnal Discovery Nights — limited-capacity evening events offering guided tours of the reptile and nocturnal houses

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Stay on designated pathways at all times — the open habitats are designed for animal welfare and visitor safety

  • Keep a safe distance from all animals, even those that may appear approachable; zookeepers will guide you during interactive sessions

  • Apply insect repellent during warmer months, as the outdoor parkland setting can attract mosquitoes

Visitor Information

Entry Fee

Admission tickets are priced per adult and child, with discounted rates available for seniors and children under a certain age. Combo deals with nearby attractions and multi-day passes are occasionally offered — check the HolidaySG.com booking page for current promotions.

Visit Duration

Plan for a full day, approximately 5 to 6 hours, to experience all four precincts at a relaxed pace. If short on time, prioritise the African Savannah, the Reptile & Nocturnal House, and at least one keeper talk for the most memorable encounters.

Accessibility

Sydney Zoo is fully wheelchair accessible with paved pathways throughout all precincts, including the indoor reptile and aquarium areas. Accessible parking, wheelchairs available for loan, and elevator access within indoor facilities ensure a comfortable visit for all guests.

Overview

Set across more than forty hectares of Western Sydney parkland, Sydney Zoo was built from the ground up around a single idea: nothing should stand between you and the animals but clear glass and open space. There are no wire cages and no deep moats, just wide sightlines into habitats designed to feel like the places they represent.

The circuit moves through African savannah, where giraffes and zebras graze within metres of the path, into Asian and primate zones home to elephants, tigers and gibbons, then indoors to one of Australia's largest combined reptile and aquarium complexes. Keepers appear throughout the day to talk about the animals in their care.

Paths are flat, broad and shaded at intervals, winding past cafés and lookout points at an easy pace. Three or four unhurried hours is enough to see everything, which makes it a rare zoo where you can slow down instead of racing the closing bell.

Plan for a full day, approximately 5 to 6 hours, to experience all four precincts at a relaxed pace. If short on time, prioritise the African Savannah, the Reptile & Nocturnal House, and at least one keeper talk for the most memorable encounters.

Guests move through five themed regions — African, Australian, Asian, Primate and the Aquarium & Reptile complex — on a single continuous circuit. Glass-fronted and moat-free viewing means clear sightlines to lions, meerkats, giraffes and elephants without wire mesh, and the layout is compact enough to cover comfortably in three to four hours.

Keeper talks and feeding sessions run throughout the day and are included with entry. On-site there is a café, gift shop, accessible restrooms, water refill points and free parking. Shade is limited in the open savannah areas, so hats, sunscreen and water are worth recommending to guests visiting in summer.
