Best time to visit Japan for cherry blossoms without the crowds?

First time planning a trip to Japan so still figuring things out.
Would love to hear your thoughts.

Late April in Takayama or Nikko is far less crowded than Kyoto during peak bloom. These areas still get beautiful sakura but with a fraction of the tourists. Consider early May if you can skip Golden Week crowds.
