Book through the official Vietnam Railways website or app to avoid scams. The Reunification Express from HN to HCMC takes 30+ hours — sleeper berths are affordable and surprisingly comfortable. For shorter scenic routes, the Lao Cai to Hanoi line through the mountains is gorgeous.
