What's the best way to travel around Sri Lanka on a budget?

Local buses are incredibly cheap (under $2 for most trips) but slow and crowded. Private drivers with a car cost around $50-70/day and are totally worth it for comfort. Train between Colombo and Ella is one of the most scenic rides in the world — book 2nd class for the best views.
