Frequently Asked Questions

The monastery at Cluny was once the largest church in Christendom and served as the central hub for the influential Cluniac monastic order, shaping European religious and architectural history.
Cluny Abbey is situated in the commune of Cluny in the Saône-et-Loire department, within the Burgundy region of eastern France.
Cluny Abbey is renowned for its monumental Romanesque architecture and its historical role as the headquarters of a major monastic reform movement that spread across medieval Europe.
The original abbey was founded in 910, and its most famous iteration, Cluny III, was constructed starting in 1088 and consecrated in 1130.
A standard ticket includes access to the remaining ruins of the Maior Ecclesia, the 18th-century convent buildings, the flour mill, and the Ochier Museum located in the former abbot's palace.
Most visitors spend between two and three hours exploring the surviving monastic ruins, the surrounding gardens, and the exhibits inside the Ochier Museum.
Visitors can view the surviving south transept, the Chapel of Jean de Bourbon, and several exposed foundation walls, as the majority of the grand basilica was dismantled after the French Revolution.
You can take a train to Mâcon or Chalon-sur-Saône and then transfer to a regional bus or local taxi service that drops you in the center of Cluny, a short walk from the abbey gates.
The site offers a 3D augmented reality tablet rental that reconstructs the destroyed sections of the abbey, making the historical ruins highly interactive and engaging for younger visitors.
The ground-level ruins, gardens, and the ground floor of the Ochier Museum are wheelchair accessible, but some upper floors of the historic buildings and uneven cobblestone areas may present difficulties.
Arriving right at the morning opening time or later in the afternoon after 3:00 PM typically allows for a quieter experience away from the peak midday tour buses.
Visitors should wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes due to the uneven stone surfaces and bring sun protection, as large sections of the ruin site are exposed to direct sunlight.
Standard undated admission tickets remain valid for one year from the date of purchase and can be used on any regular operating day within that period.
There are no dedicated left-luggage facilities or large lockers on site, so visitors are advised to leave bulky bags in their vehicles or at their accommodation.

Cluny Abbey (also known as Cluniac Abbey) was established in 910 AD by William the Pious, Duke of Aquitaine, in Cluny, located in the Saône-et-Loire department of Burgundy, France. The abbey initiated a movement for reform within the Catholic Church, exerting significant influence over the church for the following two hundred years. The essence of Cluniac monasticism held that one could achieve holiness by withdrawing from the world and practicing asceticism to diminish sinful nature. By the ninth century, after several centuries of flourishing monastic movements, the abbey began to be affected by the corrupt atmosphere of the time, becoming a place of mere ritual without genuine pious faith and sincere spirituality, ultimately fostering sin and dark dealings.
