Frequently Asked Questions
About Abbaye de Cluny
Cluny Abbey (also known as Cluniac Abbey) was established in 910 AD by William the Pious, Duke of Aquitaine, in Cluny, located in the Saône-et-Loire department of Burgundy, France. The abbey initiated a movement for reform within the Catholic Church, exerting significant influence over the church for the following two hundred years. The essence of Cluniac monasticism held that one could achieve holiness by withdrawing from the world and practicing asceticism to diminish sinful nature. By the ninth century, after several centuries of flourishing monastic movements, the abbey began to be affected by the corrupt atmosphere of the time, becoming a place of mere ritual without genuine pious faith and sincere spirituality, ultimately fostering sin and dark dealings.
