About Versailles Palace and Gardens Self-Tour
Step into the opulent world of French royalty at the Palace of Versailles, where 357 mirrors glitter in the Hall of Mirrors and the Sun King once held court. With transport and tickets already handled, you're free to lose yourself in the state apartments, royal gardens, and stories of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI at your own pace.
Local Legends & Stories
Legend says Louis XIV chose Versailles not for its beauty but for its isolation, wanting to control the nobility by keeping them close at court. The palace became a gilded cage where kings and queens ruled from 1682 to 1789, until revolution swept them away.
Must Do Experiences
-
Walk through the Hall of Mirrors at dawn when the light floods the 17 arched windows, making the 357 mirrors blaze like captured sunlight
-
Explore the Queen's Private Apartments where Marie Antoinette lived her final years, a haunting contrast to the palace's grandeur
-
Stroll the Gardens of Versailles in full bloom, watching the fountains perform their daily choreography along the Grand Canal
Hidden Gems
-
The Hamlet of Marie Antoinette — a rustic village the queen built as her escape from court, complete with a working farm and dairy
-
The Royal Opera House, a breathtaking two-story theater where court performances once took place, often empty and perfectly preserved
-
The Garden of Versailles' Orangerie in winter, where ancient citrus trees over 200 years old create an unexpected tropical greenhouse
What Makes it Special

-
