About this package
The Kecak dance was created in the 1930s by Balinese artist Wayan Limbak together with German painter Walter Spies. It is inspired by the sacred Sanghyang dance, which was traditionally performed in Hindu temples to ward off misfortune and disease. The name “Kecak” comes from the rhythmic chanting of “cak… cak… cak…” that continues throughout the performance. Traditionally, Kecak was performed only by men aged 50 and above and was limited to certain areas such as Bona Village in Gianyar Regency. Over time, the dance became more widely performed across Bali, especially during special occasions to welcome guests. Today, Kecak dance performances can be enjoyed throughout the island, particularly at cultural tourist destinations, where they showcase Bali’s rich heritage and dramatic storytelling. Meanwhile, the name of the Kecak dance is inspired by the word “Cak… cak… cak…” which is chanted throughout the dance performance. In the past, the Balinese Kecak dance was only performed in certain areas, such as Bona Village in Gianyar Regency. Day after day, Kecak is performed in almost all areas of Bali, especially on special occasions to welcome guests. But nowadays, this dance drama is shown everywhere in Bali, especially in culture-based tourist destinations.
