Local Legends & Stories
Dazaifu Tenmangu is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a 9th-century scholar and politician who was deified as Tenjin, the Shinto god of learning. Legend says that when he was exiled to Dazaifu, his beloved plum tree flew from Kyoto to join him, which is why the shrine grounds are now filled with thousands of magnificent plum trees.

Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The best time to embark on this tour is during spring for the blooming plum blossoms at Dazaifu or autumn for the spectacular foliage on Mount Tsurumi and in Yufuin. Early morning departures ensure you beat the midday crowds at the shrine, while clear, crisp winter mornings offer the highest visibility from the Beppu Ropeway observation decks.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Capture the iconic torii gates and the reflection of the Taiko-bashi bridges in the pond at Dazaifu Tenmangu during the soft morning light.
-
Shoot wide-angle landscape photos from the Beppu Ropeway cabin or the Mount Tsurumi summit deck to capture the sprawling city of Beppu and the coastline below.
-
Photograph the traditional thatched-roof houses and the misty, steam-filled waters of Kinrin Lake in Yufuin during the late afternoon for a mystical, atmospheric effect.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
When visiting Dazaifu Tenmangu, it is customary to bow slightly before passing through the torii gate and to cleanse your hands and mouth at the temizuya water pavilion. At the shrine's main hall, toss a coin into the offering box, bow twice, clap your hands twice, and bow once more to show respect to the deity.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
The Dazaifu Tenmangu Plum Blossom Festival takes place from early February to late March, transforming the shrine grounds with thousands of blooming trees and traditional performances.
-

Yufuin hosts various local craft fairs and hot spring lantern festivals during the crisp winter months, adding a magical glow to the town's streets.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines

-
Keep a close eye on your belongings in crowded areas like the Dazaifu Omotesando shopping street and the Hakata Station meeting point.
