Local Legends & Stories
According to local mythology, the sika deer of Nara are sacred messengers of the Shinto gods, having been summoned by the deity Takemikazuchi who arrived riding a white deer to protect the newly established capital. Legend says that any deer that bows to you is offering a blessing of good fortune and protection.
Must Do Experiences
-
Pedal the Ikoma Mountain Skybike for a thrilling, elevated ride with panoramic views of the Osaka and Nara plains.
-
Feed the friendly, free-roaming sika deer in Nara Park and watch them bow back to you for a cracker.

-
Hike or stroll up Mount Wakakusa to capture sweeping, unobstructed 360-degree vistas of the ancient capital.
Hidden Gems
-
Seek out the lesser-known Nigatsudo Hall at Todaiji Temple, which offers a stunning, quiet balcony view over Nara and hosts the spectacular Omizutori fire festival in spring.
-
Look for the rare white deer in Nara Park, which are considered incredibly lucky and are much shyer than the main herd near the temple.
-
Explore the quiet, moss-covered paths behind Kasuga Taisha shrine near Nara Park, where thousands of stone lanterns create a mystical atmosphere away from the main tourist crowds.

Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
Spring and autumn are the most spectacular seasons to visit, offering cherry blossoms in April and vibrant foliage in November, though these periods draw larger crowds. Early mornings provide the best lighting for photography and a quieter experience with the deer before the midday rush. Summer can be quite hot and humid, so bringing a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water is highly recommended for the Mount Wakakusa climb.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Capture the Great Buddha at Todaiji Temple from the lower angles to emphasize its massive scale, but remember to turn off your flash to preserve the ancient artifacts.
-
Head to the summit of Mount Wakakusa during your free time for golden hour-style panoramic shots of the Nara Basin, using a wide-angle lens to capture the sweeping landscape.
-
When photographing the deer in Nara Park, get down to their eye level for more engaging and intimate portraits, especially when they are bowing for a cracker.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
When visiting Todaiji Temple and other sacred sites, dress modestly and bow slightly before entering the main halls as a sign of respect. While feeding the deer is encouraged, avoid teasing them with food or feeding them anything other than the officially sold shika senbei crackers to protect their health. Tipping is not customary in Japan, so simply express your gratitude to your guide and service staff with a polite thank you.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
The Wakakusa Yamayaki festival in late January is a spectacular event where the entire mountainside is set ablaze, accompanied by a grand fireworks display.
-
The Omizutori water-drawing ceremony at Nigatsudo Hall in March features monks running along the wooden balcony with massive, showering fire torches to cleanse the spirits of the people.
-
During the Nara Tokae Lantern Festival in August, thousands of glowing candles are placed throughout Nara Park, creating a magical, illuminated nightscape.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Keep a safe distance from male deer during the autumn mating season, as they can become aggressive and protective of their territory.
-
Secure all loose items like hats, sunglasses, and maps when riding the Ikoma Mountain Skybike to prevent them from blowing away in the wind.
-
Stay on the marked trails when climbing Mount Wakakusa to avoid getting lost or disturbing the local wildlife and natural vegetation.
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
The tour includes round-trip transfers and an English-speaking guide, but entrance fees for Todaiji Temple and ride tickets for the Ikoma Mountain Skybike are not included and must be paid on-site. Children under a certain age may qualify for discounted entry at the temple and amusement park, so be sure to bring their passports or identification for verification.
Visit Duration
This full-day tour spans approximately eight hours, providing four hours in Nara and two hours at Ikoma Mountain. If you are short on time in Nara, prioritize feeding the deer near the main paths and viewing the Great Buddha at Todaiji Temple before heading up to the Mount Wakakusa viewpoint.
Accessibility
While Nara Park's main pathways and the ground floor of Todaiji Temple are generally wheelchair accessible, the steep inclines of Mount Wakakusa and certain elevated areas of the Ikoma Amusement Park may be challenging for those with mobility issues. The shared transfer coach can accommodate folding wheelchairs if notified in advance, but it is best to contact the operator regarding specific accessibility needs.
