Local Legends & Stories

The whimsical architecture of the central Kids Street was designed by the famous Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who believed that straight lines are godless and that irregular, organic shapes foster human creativity and happiness. This philosophy is woven into the very fabric of the museum, making it a beloved cultural landmark for Osaka families.

Must Do Experiences

  • Climb and explore the massive Kids Street, a stunning multi-level playground designed by renowned artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser that feels like a whimsical European town.

  • Role-play in the realistic mock supermarket, post office, and TV studio to experience everyday Japanese life and careers.

  • Experiment with science and physics in the interactive Science Play zone featuring giant bubble makers and musical sound tubes.

  • Slide down the exciting roller slides and navigate the adventurous rope courses designed to test balance and courage.

Hidden Gems

  • Check out the dedicated baby playroom on the fourth floor, which offers a quiet, safe space with specialized toys for toddlers away from the energetic older kids.

  • Look for the hidden architectural quirks in the Kids Street area, inspired by Hundertwasser's philosophy of uneven floors and irregular windows that spark imagination.

  • Utilize the 500-yen coin lockers on the first, third, and fourth floors, which are fully refundable upon use, allowing you to explore the five floors completely hands-free.

What Makes it Special

  • It seamlessly blends education with pure entertainment, allowing children to absorb Japanese culture and STEM concepts without even realizing they are learning.

  • The iconic Kids Street play structure is an architectural masterpiece that serves as both a physical challenge and a visual wonderland.

  • It provides a genuinely engaging experience for parents and guardians, eliminating the boredom often associated with traditional indoor playgrounds.

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

The best time to visit is on a weekday morning right when the doors open to avoid the heavy crowds of local school groups and weekend families. If visiting during the summer or winter school holidays, aim for early mornings or late afternoons, as the indoor climate-controlled environment makes it a perfect escape from Osaka's extreme seasonal weather.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • Capture the vibrant, uneven architecture of the Kids Street from the lower levels looking up to highlight the whimsical Hundertwasser design elements.

  • Take candid shots of your children engaged in the mock supermarket or TV studio, but be mindful to avoid photographing other families' children to respect local privacy norms.

  • Utilize the bright, natural lighting near the upper-floor windows and the well-lit science exhibits for clear, colorful indoor photos without needing a flash.

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

Japanese indoor playgrounds emphasize shared responsibility, so parents are expected to actively supervise their children and help tidy up toys after use. Keep noise levels respectful in the designated quiet zones and baby rooms, and always remove your shoes when entering specific soft-play or toddler areas.

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • During the summer Obon festival and winter New Year holidays, the plaza hosts special cultural workshops like traditional Japanese craft making and seasonal storytelling.

  • Golden Week in early May features extended hours and special science shows that draw massive crowds, making advance booking essential.

  • Throughout the year, weekend pop-up events feature local Osaka artisans teaching kids pottery, origami, and traditional sweet making.

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Ensure children wear appropriate clothing without drawstrings or loose accessories that could get caught in the rope courses and climbing nets.

  • Keep a close eye on younger children near the taller slides and multi-level structures, as the sheer size of the Kids Street can make it easy to lose sight of them.

  • Stay hydrated by utilizing the water fountains and taking breaks in the cafe area, as the physical exertion can be tiring for little ones.
