About Eddy Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall
Step onto the glass-floor Uzu-no-Michi Walkway and gaze down at the roaring Naruto whirlpools before diving into the engineering marvels of the Eddy Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall. This combo ticket offers a thrilling blend of natural wonders and human ingenuity, making it an unforgettable stop for curious travellers and engineering enthusiasts exploring Tokushima.
Local Legends & Stories
Local folklore once attributed the violent Naruto whirlpools to a giant sea dragon thrashing beneath the waves, a myth that contrasts beautifully with the modern scientific and engineering explanations showcased at the memorial hall.
Must Do Experiences
-
Walk across the transparent glass floor panels of the Uzu-no-Michi Walkway to witness the massive Naruto whirlpools churning directly beneath your feet.
-
Explore the interactive exhibits and massive scale models at the Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall to understand the incredible engineering behind this suspension bridge.
-
Take in the panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea and the bridge connecting Shikoku to Awaji Island from the observation decks.
Hidden Gems
-
Look out for the hidden optical illusion photo spots along the walkway where the bridge pillars seem to align perfectly with the whirlpools below.
-
Visit the lesser-known Uzu Hill Park section included in your ticket for a quiet, elevated vantage point away from the main walkway crowds.
-
Check the daily tidal charts posted at the entrance to time your visit exactly with the spring tides for the largest and most dramatic whirlpool formations.
What Makes it Special
-
The rare opportunity to stand suspended 45 meters above the ocean on a glass walkway while watching one of the world's largest tidal whirlpools.
-
A deeply immersive educational experience that breaks down complex suspension bridge engineering into fun, interactive multimedia displays suitable for all ages.
-
The seamless combination of raw natural power and monumental human architecture in a single, easily accessible coastal park location.
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The best time to visit is strictly dictated by the tides rather than the season, so aim for the hours surrounding the daily spring tides for the most spectacular whirlpools. Early mornings during the summer months offer cooler temperatures and softer lighting for photography, while autumn provides clear, crisp skies for viewing the bridge.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Shoot straight down through the glass floor panels using a wide-angle lens to capture the dramatic scale of the whirlpools against the ocean depths.
-
Position yourself at the end of the Uzu-no-Michi Walkway during the golden hour just before closing to capture the sun reflecting off the Onaruto Bridge's suspension cables.
-
Avoid using flash photography inside the Memorial Hall to prevent glare on the interactive screens and glass display cases.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
Japanese visitors often maintain a quiet, respectful demeanor in the museum and memorial hall areas, so keep your voice down when exploring the indoor exhibits. It is also customary to queue neatly for the glass-floor viewing spots during peak hours, allowing everyone a fair chance to look down and take photos.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
The Naruto Whirlpool Festival in spring and autumn features special boat tours and local food stalls around Naruto Park to celebrate the tidal phenomenon.
-
During the summer Obon season and Golden Week, the walkway and memorial hall extend their operating hours until 19:00 to accommodate the surge in domestic travellers.
-
Winter illumination events occasionally light up the Onaruto Bridge at night, offering spectacular evening views from the nearby coastal areas.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Hold onto the handrails tightly while on the Uzu-no-Michi Walkway, as the strong coastal winds can occasionally cause sudden gusts.
-
Supervise young children closely near the glass panels and observation decks to ensure they do not run or jump on the walkway surfaces.
-
Stay on the marked paths within Uzu Hill Park, as the natural coastal cliffs can have steep, uneven drops.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Eddy Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall
The Onaruto Bridge connects Ōge Island with Awaji Island, serving as a vital link between the Shikoku region and Japan's main island of Honshu. It is a suspension bridge.
The bridge piers were constructed using a multi-column foundation method to avoid interference with the Naruto Whirlpools. Originally designed to accommodate both railway and road traffic, the structure included space reserved for Shinkansen rail passage. However, since the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge connecting Awaji Island to Honshu did not allocate railway space due to geological constraints, there are currently no plans for railway routes on the Ōnaruto Bridge.
The Eddy Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall focuses on whirlpools and bridge piers, using video and simulation devices to introduce visitors to the formation of the Naruto whirlpools and the structure of the Great Naruto Bridge from various perspectives. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Great Naruto Bridge and the Seto Inland Sea, as well as experience sightseeing VR.
Supervise young children closely near the glass panels and observation decks to ensure they do not run or jump on the walkway surfaces.
