About One day tour in Izu: Atami Sunshine Coast Road, Jogasaki Coast, and Izu Omuroyama Day Tour|Tokyo
Escape the bustling city of Tokyo and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Izu Peninsula on this comprehensive day tour. Marvel at the iconic matcha pudding-shaped Mt. Omuro, interact with adorable wildlife at the Izu Cactus Zoo, and take in the stunning ocean vistas along the Atami Sunshine Coast Road and Jogasaki Coast.
Local Legends & Stories
Mt. Omuro is steeped in local folklore, with legends suggesting its perfectly symmetrical crater was formed by a giant's scoop, while the ancient Jogasaki Coast lava flows are said to be the remnants of a fierce battle between mountain deities and sea dragons.
Must Do Experiences
-
Ride the Mt. Omuro Ropeway to the crater rim for a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view of the Izu Peninsula and the Pacific Ocean.
-
Stroll along the dramatic volcanic cliffs and suspension bridges of the Jogasaki Coast to witness the powerful beauty of the Sagami Bay.
-
Meet and feed the free-roaming capybaras and other exotic animals at the charming Izu Shaboten Zoo.
-
Enjoy a scenic drive along the Atami Sunshine Coast Road, soaking in the breathtaking coastal landscapes and ocean breezes.
Hidden Gems
-
Look out for the wild peacocks roaming freely around the Izu Shaboten Zoo, which often surprise visitors with their sudden appearances.
-
The volcanic rock formations along the Jogasaki Coast hide small tidal pools where you can spot tiny marine life and unique coastal flora.
-
On exceptionally clear days from the Mt. Omuro summit, you can spot the distant silhouette of the Izu Islands floating on the Pacific horizon.
What Makes it Special
-
The seamless round-trip shared transfer from Shinjuku eliminates the stress of navigating complex rural train networks to reach the Izu Peninsula.
-
An English-speaking guide provides rich cultural and geological context, transforming a simple sightseeing trip into an educational journey.
-
The tour perfectly balances dramatic coastal scenery, unique volcanic landscapes, and interactive wildlife encounters in a single day.
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures and clearest skies for panoramic views from Mt. Omuro and pleasant walks along the Jogasaki Coast. Early morning departures ensure you beat the midday crowds at the zoo and ropeway, while late autumn and winter provide the highest chance of seeing Mount Fuji in the distance on crisp, clear days.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Capture the iconic matcha pudding shape of Mt. Omuro from the lower viewing platforms before taking the ropeway up for crater rim shots.
-
Use a fast shutter speed to photograph the crashing waves against the dark volcanic rocks at Jogasaki Coast, especially from the suspension bridge.
-
Bring a polarizing filter to reduce glare from the Pacific Ocean and enhance the vibrant blue skies during your coastal drive.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
When feeding the animals at the Izu Shaboten Zoo, strictly use the provided food and avoid touching them unless instructed by the staff to ensure their wellbeing. It is customary to bow slightly and greet your guide and driver when boarding and disembarking the bus as a sign of respect. Maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor when observing wildlife, avoiding loud noises that might startle the free-roaming animals.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
The annual Mt. Omuro Yama-yaki mountain burning festival in February sets the dry winter grass on fire to maintain the mountain's beautiful shape and promote new spring growth.
-
Spring brings the vibrant blooming of cherry blossoms and azaleas around the Izu Peninsula, creating a stunning contrast with the green crater of Mt. Omuro.
-
Autumn foliage season in November transforms the surrounding Izu highlands into a breathtaking canvas of red, orange, and gold.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Hold onto the handrails tightly when crossing the suspension bridges at Jogasaki Coast, as they can sway and become slippery when wet.
-
Stay strictly on the marked paths around the Mt. Omuro crater rim, as the edges can be steep and the volcanic soil may be loose.
-
Apply sunscreen and wear a hat during the summer months, as the coastal cliffs and mountain summit offer very little natural shade.
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
The tour package includes round-trip transfers and an English-speaking guide, but please note that Mt. Omuro Ropeway and Izu Cactus Zoo entrance fees are not included and must be paid locally. Child and senior discounts are typically available for these attraction entrance fees when purchased on-site.
Visit Duration
This full-day tour lasts approximately 10 to 12 hours from the Shinjuku departure to the evening return. If you have limited energy, prioritize the Mt. Omuro Ropeway ride and the capybara exhibits at the zoo, and enjoy the Jogasaki Coast views from the main parking area rather than hiking the full cliff trail.
Accessibility
The Mt. Omuro Ropeway and the main areas of the Izu Shaboten Zoo are generally wheelchair accessible, featuring paved paths and ramps. However, the natural trails at Jogasaki Coast and the steep stairs leading to some suspension bridges are not suitable for wheelchairs or those with severe mobility issues.
