About Kushimoto Marine Park
Dive into the vibrant underwater world of Kushimoto Marine Park, Japan's oldest marine park, where you can explore over 600 species of marine life without getting wet. Your ticket includes access to both the aquarium and the unique Underwater Observation Tower, plus a handy 1,000 yen meal voucher to enjoy a delicious local bite. It is the perfect family-friendly escape combining education, interactive touch pools, and breathtaking glass-bottom views of the Pacific Ocean.
Local Legends & Stories
The waters around Kushimoto have long been revered by local fishermen, who historically believed the rich marine biodiversity was a blessing from the sea gods of the Kumano region. The park itself was built to honor and protect this delicate ecosystem, continuing the local legacy of living in harmony with the powerful Kuroshio Current.
Must Do Experiences
-
Descend into the Underwater Observation Tower to watch wild fish swim past the windows in their natural ocean habitat.
-
Get hands-on at the interactive touch pools where children and beginners can safely feel sea cucumbers and starfish.
-
Catch the scheduled feeding demonstrations to see sharks, rays, and tropical fish in action while learning from expert aquarists.
-
Use your included 1,000 yen meal voucher to grab a refreshing snack or lunch at the park's onsite cafe.
Hidden Gems
-
The Underwater Observation Tower is actually built directly into the ocean, offering a rare glimpse of wild Kushimoto marine life rather than just captive aquarium exhibits.
-
Look closely at the coral reef tanks to spot the incredibly rare and vibrant species native to the Kuroshio Current that washes past the Wakayama coast.
-
The glass-bottom observation areas provide a secret vantage point for spotting sea turtles that occasionally wander near the park's coastal perimeter.
What Makes it Special
-
It is Japan's first and oldest marine park, pioneering marine conservation and education since its establishment in the 1970s.
-
The unique combination of an indoor aquarium and an offshore Underwater Observation Tower offers a dual perspective on marine ecosystems.
-
The park sits directly in the path of the warm Kuroshio Current, allowing it to showcase a rare mix of tropical and temperate marine species in one location.
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The best time to visit is right when the park opens at 9:00 AM to enjoy the underwater tower before school groups and tour buses arrive. Late spring to early autumn offers the most comfortable weather for exploring the outdoor coastal areas, though the indoor aquarium makes it a fantastic year-round destination regardless of rain or shine.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Turn off your camera flash when photographing the aquarium tanks and the Underwater Observation Tower to avoid startling the marine life and to prevent harsh glare on the glass.
-
The best lighting for the underwater tower windows is during mid-morning when the sun penetrates the ocean surface, illuminating the wild fish in a beautiful natural blue glow.
-
Position your camera lens directly against the glass of the touch pools and main tanks to eliminate reflections and capture crystal-clear macro shots of the coral and tropical fish.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
Japanese aquariums are highly focused on education and quiet observation, so it is customary to speak softly and avoid tapping on the glass enclosures. When using the touch pools, follow the staff's instructions carefully and only touch the designated marine animals gently with wet hands to protect their delicate skin. Tipping is not practiced in Japan, so simply offer a polite thank you to the aquarists and cafe staff.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
Summer Illumination Nights typically occur in July and August, where the aquarium tanks are lit with special LED displays after dark for a magical evening experience.
-
Winter Penguin Walks and special feeding shows are often hosted during the December to February holiday season to entertain visiting families.
-
Spring Break Marine Education Workshops in March offer hands-on learning sessions for kids, focusing on coral reef conservation and the Kuroshio Current.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
The spiral staircase leading down into the Underwater Observation Tower can be steep and slightly slippery, so wear comfortable, non-slip shoes and use the handrails.
-
Keep a close eye on young children around the open touch pools and glass-bottom observation areas to prevent accidental slips or falls.
-
If you are prone to motion sickness or claustrophobia, take your time descending into the underwater tower, as the enclosed space and gentle sway of the ocean can occasionally trigger mild discomfort.
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
Your booking includes a comprehensive adult ticket covering both the Aquarium and the Underwater Observation Tower, along with a bonus 1,000 yen meal voucher for onsite dining. Children and seniors can purchase discounted tickets directly at the counter, and combo deals with local Kushimoto sightseeing buses are occasionally available during peak tourist seasons.
Visit Duration
Plan to spend about two to three hours to comfortably explore the main aquarium, watch a feeding demonstration, and descend into the Underwater Observation Tower. If you are short on time, prioritize the Underwater Observation Tower and the main coral reef tanks, as these offer the most unique and visually stunning experiences.
Accessibility
The main aquarium building, gift shop, and cafe are fully wheelchair accessible with ramp entries and spacious pathways. However, the Underwater Observation Tower requires navigating a steep spiral staircase, making it inaccessible for wheelchairs and strollers, though staff can assist with alternative viewing arrangements.
