This all-inclusive guided tour handles the logistics so you can fully immerse yourself in Japan's hidden western gems.

Local Legends & Stories

Motonosumi Shrine is steeped in local folklore, with legends claiming that the deity enshrined here protects fishermen and grants wishes to those who successfully toss a coin into the high-placed offering box. The surrounding coastline is also said to be the dwelling place of a dragon god, which is why the nearby blowhole is named after the mythical underwater Dragon Palace.

Must Do Experiences

  • Walk or drive across the spectacular Tsunoshima Bridge to capture the stunning contrast of the white structure against the vivid blue ocean.

  • Explore the vast underground chambers of Akiyoshido Cave, admiring the golden pillar and other magnificent limestone formations.

  • Stroll through the serene Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park to see the unique karst plateau landscape above ground.

Hidden Gems

  • Visit the Tsunoshima Lighthouse park at the edge of the island for a quiet, panoramic view of the bridge and the Sea of Japan that most tour groups skip.

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for exploring the outdoor coastal sites and the karst plateau, while the cave maintains a cool, constant temperature year-round. Early morning departures are ideal for capturing the Tsunoshima Bridge with softer lighting and fewer crowds, though this tour operates on a set daytime schedule. Summer provides vibrant blue skies that perfectly contrast with the white bridge, but be prepared for higher humidity above ground.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • Capture the iconic shot of the red torii gates at Motonosumi Shrine from the lower steps, framing them against the dramatic backdrop of the Sea of Japan.

  • Use a wide-angle lens inside Akiyoshido Cave to capture the immense scale of the Golden Pillar and the cavern ceilings, keeping your ISO high due to the dim lighting.

  • Shoot the Tsunoshima Bridge from the coastal viewpoints on either side of the island to emphasize its sweeping curve and the vivid azure waters.

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

When visiting Motonosumi Shrine, it is customary to bow slightly before passing through the torii gates and to walk on the sides of the path, leaving the center for the deities. Please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor inside the shrine grounds, and remember that while the coin toss is a fun tradition, it is rooted in Shinto prayer practices. Tipping is not expected in Japan, as excellent service and gratuities are already thoughtfully included in your tour package.

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • The Akiyoshidai Karst Plateau is transformed in late February when locals conduct a traditional controlled burn, turning the golden grass black and creating a striking landscape.

  • During the summer Obon festival season, the cave and surrounding areas often host special illuminated night events and traditional local dances.

  • In autumn, the contrast of the vibrant red torii gates against the changing colors of the coastal foliage makes for a spectacular seasonal viewing experience.

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Watch your step and use the provided handrails inside Akiyoshido Cave, as the limestone walkways can be slippery from natural condensation.

  • Stay behind the designated safety barriers at Motonosumi Shrine, as the cliffside paths near the ocean can be steep and subject to strong coastal winds.

  • Remain seated while the bus is in motion and follow the tour guide's instructions regarding safe boarding and alighting at each stop.
