About MoonBay Island Snorkeling / Diving 1 Day Tour
MoonBay Island offers a perfect one-day escape to a pristine, uninhabited paradise just off Sabah’s coast, where vibrant fringing reefs teem with marine life and soft sandy beaches promise tranquility. Whether you're snorkeling through crystal-clear waters or enjoying a quiet beachside picnic, this guided tour provides intimate access to one of Ranau’s best-kept secrets.
Local Legends & Stories
Locals call MoonBay Island 'Pulau Bulan' and believe its crescent shape brings good fortune to those who swim facing the rising sun. Some elders recall stories of fishermen finding shelter here during monsoon surges, crediting the island’s unique reef formation for diverting dangerous currents.
Must Do Experiences
-
Snorkel the intact fringing reefs teeming with clownfish, parrotfish, and soft corals
-
Relax on the private mainland beaches accessible only by boat
-
Join a guided snorkel or dive session with a certified Dive Instructor
-
Capture underwater moments among reef stations near the island’s western cove
Hidden Gems
-
The shallow lagoon near the eastern shore hosts rare sea turtles during low tide
-
Local guides know a secret patch of black coral just south of the main reef
-
Early morning arrivals often spot kingfish schools near the jetty area
What Makes it Special
-
It’s one of the few privately managed island access points near Kota Kinabalu with limited daily visitor capacity
-
The tour includes direct boat transfers from Jalan Kinabalu with no crowded group stops
-
Guided snorkeling/dive sessions by certified instructors ensure safety and reef education
-
Private beach entrance fees are included — no unexpected local charges
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
Visit between March and October during the dry season for clearest waters and calm seas. Mornings (8–10am) offer best lighting for underwater photography and lowest wind swell. Mid-week tours are consistently less crowded than weekends.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Use a waterproof housing or phone case — the clarity allows vibrant shots within 3 meters depth
-
Shoot during golden hour (early morning) for soft light on the beach and minimal glare on the water
-
Avoid using flash near coral — it stresses marine life and is prohibited in reef zones
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
Sabah’s coastal communities are respectful of quiet, nature-oriented behaviour; loud music or excessive splashing is frowned upon. Tipping is discretionary and appreciated but not expected — if you wish to thank your guide, RM10–RM20 is customary.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
No large festivals occur on the uninhabited island itself, but April’s Sabah Regattas sometimes influence sea conditions — ask your guide for real-time updates. Peak coral spawning typically occurs in November and creates a mesmerizing underwater bloom visible on night snorkel options (not included in this day tour).
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Always stay within sight of your Dive Instructor — the reef slopes drop quickly beyond the calm zones
-
Check your gear fit before entering the water — ill-fitting masks or fins increase fatigue and panic risk
-
Stay hydrated and seek shade during breaks — humidity near the coast feels heavier than inland
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
All beach entrance fees are included in the tour price — no additional local charges. Group rates and family combos are available for 3+ guests; ask your booking agent for details.
Visit Duration
The full 1-day tour runs approximately 4–5 hours round-trip. If time is limited, prioritize the guided snorkel session first, then enjoy the beach — the boat return departs sharply at the scheduled time.
Accessibility
The island and mainland beaches are accessed by boat and involve walking on soft sand and uneven terrain; wheelchairs are not suitable for this tour. Assistance can be provided for guests with mobility limitations during boat transfer and brief beach visits.
