About Tauranga Evening Glowworm Kayak Tour
Paddle through the serene waterways of Tauranga under a canopy of stars and bioluminescent glowworms on this enchanting evening kayak tour. Drift silently past native wildlife, toast with local wine, and marvel at the magical glow of thousands of glowworms clinging to the limestone overhangs of the Waitomo-inspired caves.
Local Legends & Stories
The waterways of Tauranga are steeped in Māori lore, with many stories passed down through generations about taniwha (guardian spirits) that protect the rivers and lakes. The glowworms themselves are known as 'arokihā' in te reo Māori, and are revered as messengers between the physical and spiritual worlds.
Must Do Experiences
-
Glide silently through glowworm-lit waterways and watch the ceiling sparkle like a starry night sky
-
Raise a glass to New Zealand's award-winning wine with a local tasting included
-
Spot native birdlife including kiwi, pukeko, and tūī along the waterway banks
-
Enjoy warm, locally produced refreshments as the sun sets over the Tauranga harbour
Hidden Gems
-
The glowworms are most active and visible after 9pm when the water is calmest, so arrive early to secure a prime spot on the kayak
-
The waterways here are home to rare black mud eels — keep your eyes peeled just below the surface for their shimmering silhouettes
-
Ask your guide about the Māori name for the area; many waterways carry deep spiritual significance tied to local iwi legends
What Makes it Special
-
This is one of the few glowworm kayak experiences in the North Island that combines cave exploration with a wine tasting — a truly unique pairing
-
The small-group format ensures an intimate, peaceful experience away from crowded tourist spots
-
Locally sourced refreshments and wines give you an authentic taste of the Bay of Plenty region
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The best months to experience this tour are from April through October when the weather is cooler and glowworm activity is at its peak. New Zealand's autumn and winter evenings provide the darkest, calmest conditions for the most spectacular glowworm displays.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Use a camera with a high ISO setting and a wide aperture to capture the glowworms without flash, which can wash out the natural light
-
A tripod or stabiliser is not possible on a kayak, so brace your elbows against the hull for the sharpest shots
-
Enable night mode on your smartphone and hold your breath for a steady shot as the kayak gently rocks
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
It is customary to listen respectfully to your guide's stories about the land and its Māori significance — this is a cherished part of the experience Pāha (gifts or tokens of appreciation) are not expected, but a sincere thank you in te reo Māori — 'kia ora' — is always warmly received Be mindful that some waterways are considered tapu (sacred); follow your guide's instructions and show respect for the environment
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
Annual Matariki celebrations in June or July feature special glowworm tours with Māori storytelling and traditional performances
-
Summer solstice kayaks offer extended hours with live acoustic music along the waterway
-
Quarterly wine pairing events partner with local Bay of Plenty vineyards for exclusive tasting experiences
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Always wear the provided life jacket throughout the tour, even if you are a strong swimmer
-
Stay seated in the kayak at all times and avoid sudden movements that could cause capsizing
-
Listen carefully to the safety briefing before launch and follow your guide's directions during the tour
