About Pon Elephant Thailand

Pon Elephant Thailand offers an ethical elephant encounter in the lush Mae Wang area near Chiang Mai, where visitors connect with rescued elephants in a natural habitat run by generations of elephant caretakers. Led by Mae Pin and her family, this certified ethical sanctuary provides immersive experiences that blend education, conservation, and meaningful interaction.

Local Legends & Stories

In northern Thai culture, elephants symbolize wisdom strength and royal heritage—Mae Pin’s family preserved this legacy after logging bans displaced elephants from traditional work. According to local lore, elephants choose their mahouts, not the other way around, and Mae Pin’s bond with her herd reflects this sacred connection.

  • Feed and bathe elephants in the natural river setting

  • Learn about elephant care and conservation from the mahout family

  • Visit the elephant nursery and hear stories of rescued elephants' journeys

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

The ideal time to visit is early morning (8–10 am) when temperatures are cooler and elephants are most active and playful. The dry season from November to February offers comfortable weather and clearer paths, though weekends can be busier—weekday visits provide a more intimate experience.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • Use natural light during morning hours for the softest illumination and vibrant elephant-grey skin tones

  • The riverbank near the feeding station offers the best angle for close-ups with elephants mid-interaction

  • Flash photography is discouraged to avoid startling the elephants—opt for higher ISO settings instead

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

Avoid touching an elephant’s head, considered sacred in Thai culture, and never offer food directly from your hand unless guided—elephants may misinterpret hand movements Remove shoes before entering any temple-like structures on-site and speak softly to respect the animals' calm environment Tipping is appreciated but not expected; if you wish to tip, place cash in the designated donation box for the mahouts’ welfare fund

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • The Elephant Festival in November features decorated elephants and cultural performances—book well in advance

  • Valentine’s Day and Loy Krathong (November) often include special bonding activities and themed photo moments

  • Peak visitor months (December–January) include longer daylight hours ideal for full-day experiences

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Follow the mahout’s instructions closely—elephants are large animals and unpredictable in new situations

  • Stay behind marked barriers during feeding and bathing to ensure safe distance

  • Stay hydrated and watch for signs of heat exhaustion, especially during midday hours even in cooler months

Overview

Explore ethical elephant adventures with a variety of activities and visits to important sites. Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand

Discover Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand with specialist tour operator Pon Elephant Thailand License No. 24/01077 Certified by "DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM" If you’re planning a trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand, and love elephants, Pon Elephant Thailand is a spot you won’t want to miss.

Ms.Supin Achanhan (Mae Pin), the heart and soul behind this place, comes from a family that has cared for elephants for generations. Back in 1964, when the Thai government shut down the logging industry, it was tough for them. Elephants eat a lot, and without the logging work, finding enough food for them became a big challenge.

But Mae Pin and her family, who see these elephants as part of their family, did everything they could to get by. After COVID hit, it was even harder-no tourists meant no income. But when things started to bounce back, Mae Pin found a way to turn things around by welcoming tourists to meet her elephants. That’s how Pon Elephant Thailand was born, right in the Mae Wang area, which used to be a hotspot for adventure activities like trekking and bamboo rafting.

Now, Mae Pin and her family are dedicated to giving these gentle giants the best life possible. At Pon Elephant Thailand, you can feed the elephants, bathe with them, and join in on other fun activities—all on a beautiful 30-acre piece of land that the elephants call home. It’s not just about having fun; it’s about learning, too. Mae Pin hopes that both locals and tourists will come to connect with and learn about these amazing animals.

So, if you’re in the area, drop by! It’s a great way to learn about elephants and see them in a place where they’re truly loved and cared for.
