Notes
Overview
Trolleys loop through central San Antonio and then head south along the river, linking places that are awkward to reach any other way — and with commentary running as you go, so the city's layers arrive in the right order.
In town the stops cover the Alamo, the River Walk, Market Square, La Villita and the restored brewery buildings of the Pearl District. Beyond that the route runs out to the Spanish colonial missions — Concepción, San José, San Juan and Espada — four eighteenth-century churches strung along the San Antonio River and collectively a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The guides cover the 1836 siege, the Tejano and German settlement of the city and how the River Walk came to be built below street level after a devastating flood. The trolleys are open-sided, which is pleasant in spring and a good reason for a hat in July.
